winter brings gremlins to my 2010 glk350

hello again, looking for any guidance and hypotheses!

last january, when it was very wet and cold here in British Columbia, Canada, my 2010 glk350 that i'd had for only 6 months started acting very strangely. at first it was lights that would not shut off. then the fan would come on by itself in the driveway and run full blast. finally, i started it up one day, put it in drive, but it refused to move. had to have it towed to a mechanic. the mechanic didn't have time to look at it for two weeks... and when they did the fan had probably been going non-stop until the battery was dead. they got the battery charged and.... couldn't find a damn thing wrong with it. i drove away without any issue located.

the machine ran like a dream all last summer.

now its getting cold. a couple of days ago the ABS breaks would pump for less than a second while driving and not having your foot anywhere near the break pedal. i disconnected the battery hoping to "reboot" the system. no effect. i washed the car and especially around the wheels thinking maybe a dirty sensor somewhere. the problem cleared up. but today the front right headlamp stays on after the car is shut down.

anyone have similar issues and had it fixed?

Sounds like a SAM issue perhaps. Maybe water is getting into the computer module and that's why it acts wonky. I know I've experienced similar issues years ago, after really heavy downpours overnight with the car parked outside. Either the headlamps wouldn't work, or the Blind Spot Assist wouldn't work, or other electrical gremlins.

Never dug deeper because it was so rare. I now keep it parked in the garage and no more issues since.

Love the 350 GLK, when it is running properly, but the SAM issues and other electronic possible problems can be a real nasty experience to undergo.

I am not sure where the article was I read last year about how to rebuild a SAM, but after reading the article and buying some basic supplies to do so, I am sure I saved myself some expenses that a dealership would have charged. Sadly unless a owner wants to purchase a good scan tool, learn about the vast electrical systems that interconnect on the GLK (as other Benz models also do) it is hard to recommend any fixes aside from a really good dealership.I own 2 GLK 350's, one hot rodded and one kept totally stock. Having these two, made me go a new c300 4matic, which I am also happy with.

I would highly recommend any Benz owner that wants to scan their car to see what might be going on, to purchase the MB II Scan tool by iCarsoft. Even if you are not going to be doing your own wrenching, it can at least give you some indication as to what might be in need of repair so you can have truthful information. Not all shops are honest with car owners or give an honest price.

Purchase a good scan tool please. See what information it will give you. One of my 350's had an issue with a fuse junction located under the hood that relays input from the ignition (key) to the steering column, and the level of voltage from the battery. I was just as puzzled as you are with your issues until I started to read and understand all the different systems connected to simply allow the car to actually start. First indication was an alert telling me on the dash to remove the key from the ignition switch, but it also would not start until I tinkered with it. Aside from the fuse junction, my Battery was in need of replacement and I learned the cheap battery that was in the car when I first purchsed it, was not the type the Benz should have had in it to begin with.

I sure hope you can start finding the sources of your problems one at a time, I am thinking they are all or in part, related to each other from the list of what you say you have going on. The brake ABS is one real puzzle if the brake is otherwise functioning properly.

Best of luck and keep us updated.

i need the scan tool if i'm going to drive this vehicle, for sure.

the latest is, i fiddled with the exterior light switch and the right side lights that would not shut off... shut off. i'm not sure if this switch was not seated in a particular selection (between selections) or maybe just needs a cleaning or is faulty.

but the problem has gone away for the time being.
