Suprise Engine Light

Started the 2010 GLK350 4matic upon returning from a beer run. That nasty yellow light stayed on past start up and all the way home. Was on all day today as well. No syptoms showing, everything seems to be running in order, smooth no noise or any indication of anything running amiss! Tomorrow I will find my scan tool, but really I am a bit at odds as to what the hell this is? I've recently had both A and B service, replaced the ALT, Injectors, intake manifold, coils/plugs, MAP, upper engine seals, belts, pullies. Now I am thinking 02 sensor but engine runs smooth and starts right up. Dunno what it could be?

You're going to need to get it scanned for codes and go from there. Could be anything causing the light. Good luck to you.

Yes, I will have to scan and go from there. I am sure it will be some ungodly costly issue. I have two GLK's this one is 100% stock, and is now starting to eat up my retirement funds. Been thinking about fixing what is wrong now and selling it, but then what do ya buy in todays world of crummy cars?

Perhaps you could find a newer model with lower miles. They're very unique vehicles.

The check engine light is generally emissions related issues. Guessing the cause will get you nowhere. You will need to plug in a mercedes aware OBDII scanner to read the trouble codes and use that to diagnose the problem.

Out of curiosity, how many miles do you have on the 2010?

Could be something as simple as a loose gas cap. Find your code scanner or stop by your nearest Auto Zone and they'll scan it for free.

Sooner rather than later.

Just finished running my scanner. Fault codes 1081/1089 fine/slow leak in evap emissions system. Well now I need someone to do a smoke test to see where the leak is at. Not smelling gas inside the car, so that most likely is not the problem. But it can be many other things, until I find the leak...time for another beer.

Just south of 100K, and yeah codes show small leak in evap emissions system control, Could be a number of things. Not smelling gas at all in the car, so, sort of ruling out fuel pump issues..dang I hate car problems....lol

I like that answer....could it be that I get off such a cheap fix? I have been looking on partsgeek for everything from fuel pumps to secondary air pumps and valves, expecting at least a grand for further testings (smoke leak test) and parts....I can toss the parts on but do not have a smoker for leak testing. BUT yes, I will see what quality gas caps I can find at the local parts house. Thanks!

Just found a repair service that has a smoker, ordered a new fuel tank cap that is a actual Mercedes Brand cap, popped the rear seat up for a gas smell test while the engine was running (not smelling gas there) BUT can't get the smoker test done until Nov. 10th!!!! I should see what a smoker cost! LOL

When the new gas cap arrives, put it on then clear the code. Give it a few days to see if the code comes back.

Today new gas cap installed. Erased the trouble code for leak in EVAP systems, and drove the car around for about 20 minutes. No yellow light! So the gas cap just might be that fix. I will give it more drive time as I am aware it might take multiple cycles to actually trip a check engine light code.

Cigars, even cigarettes smoke when blown into manifold will find leaks, just find a hose that doesn't have a check valve.
hopefully the fuel cap was the only issue. I have a 190e that was always leaking coolant, it was just the coolant cap o ring was old

Well I did not see any smoke anywhere doing this on my own with no smoke equipment to use (used old tobacco pipe and hose connector) and as I had replaced gas cap, erased codes I thought I was all done with this....NOPE! Check engine light is back on, and scanner is showing the same codes. BUT something new also popped up again, turn thh key and nothing...no alerts or codes yet but no start until I messed with the key. I am seriously thinking it is time to fix this GLK and sell it. Body engine trans brakes tires wheels interior all in super nice shape, just these pesky other issues that are too much a pain to have to deal with for me.

Maybe so, besides, it's going on 11+ years old anyway. Why not upgrade?
