Measuring Ride Height

13 Glk 350, 67000 miles. I am getting new struts, my mechanic says I should get new springs even though mine are not broken or visibly sagging, I think measuring the ride height is the way to determine what is needed. Ride height is supposed to be 8.2” - 208 mm, by the owners manual. Where do I measure this? From the rocker panel?

your mechanic is gouging you. I would even get a second opinion on new struts. unless you offroad the vehicle your struts should last to 100k and even then you just check its dampening by making sure your car doesn't bounce around when you push down on the fender. springs should last the life of the vehicle as your car isn't resting on springs.

your control arm bushings would go sooner than the above.

No he isn’t gouging me, he is a friend , we did control arms and the front is loose and bounces. He just wants to cover all bases . I’m tired of the ride, Chicago streets have beat it up, lotta bad roads I travel every day. But I think springs are good

can’t do much about the loose and bouncy ride. It is a glk after all. Next is wheels and tires. If you have the 20” amg wheels they are sportier but the glk’s higher center of gravity will always induce more body roll

The Glk isn’t loose and bouncy with good parts, I have a few parts that shake and make noise. So I am replacing everything. The control arms were very bad, those I replaced.

That's an interesting perspective. One thing that jumped out at me about mine before I bought it was how firm, tight and precise it seemed, compared to all the other cars I had looked at.
