Exclamation CD changer "drive unavailable"

This message showed up and there is a beep every minute that I can't turn off. The drive doesn't detect CDs and I can't eject the ones that are in there.

Has anyone experienced this?

XXX Unavailable usually means that XXX failed to initialize on the CANBUS or did not respond to a request. Check fuse 11 under hood. If it’s good, CD player may have completely failed. A scanner may show a DTC, but a hand held code reader probably will not. It could be anything: power supply, drive motor, drive belt, infrared LED. Not sure about the beep.

I wanted to post an update for future readers

I resolved this issue today by removing the head unit from the vehicle and disassembling the cd changer to remove the cds that were inside. I put it back together and the error message and beeping is gone. I havent attempted to put in a cd and I won’t attempt to use it again.

There’s a video on YouTube on how to remove the head unit. Disassembling the cd changer is intricate but doable

You might be able to disassemble your head unit and swap out the drive, but it's not necessarily a task for those who aren't comfortable taking a lot of tiny little fiddly bits apart and getting them back together.

I assume your vehicle is a pre-facelift (2010 - 12) with the NTG4.0 head unit. If so, the easiest approach might be to just swap out the entire unit. Not really a terribly difficult job - a little fiddly getting all the cables behind the unit out of the way during reassembly, but much easier than trying to swap the drive (all the same tasks plus tearing apart the head unit). FWIW, there is no code required to install a "foreign" head unit, though it could be programmed for different options than yours (like whether the rearview camera is enabled, etc.).

This video should help a lot...

@deltron I have the same problem. I got the unit out of my car and it's now on the kitchen table in pieces, with screws everywhere! I can see the cds inside the unit, but I can't for the life of me work out how to get into that section. Any suggestions on disassembling this last part would be greatly appreciated, as I'd really like to get my cds back.

Those things are really not designed to be DIY-friendly. It's "just" a matter of figuring out what's in your way and removing it. I'm betting there won't be any online videos on the process (hopefully this isn't one I'll ever have to make!!!). ;-)
