As the crow flies I am about 8 miles from the USA Border.

For the price of a tank of fuel I think it well worth the investment. Of course our fuel prices are the highest in North America so it may cost you more than a tank full LOL
Roam like home for $12.00 per day extra? Very kind of them but I would pass :-)

You could use your cell phone with google maps and just download the required map prior to departing, You can then use the maps with no data/offline mode. Doesn't cost a cent.

The moment I cross the border and my phone even checks for updates or emails my phone company charges me $12 in the USA. Last thing I want is something hanging from my dash, minimalist LOL Besides I don't think google will download one map for my 6000 km trip in June.

I think I still have relatives living in Dartmouth, or last time I drove there I did, lost contact with them. Long drive now.

Oh I still have my Garmin GPS with lifetime map updates as well

I had an empty 64 GB USB formatted ex fat , but a 32 GB would be enough. You have to use a thumb drive not a SD card.

Started the car , put the thumb drive into the usb slot and within 2 seconds a screen appeared asking me if I wanted to proceed.

It appears to be the same updates that MB uses. Hard to tell because they don't sell you a physical USB or disc.

Oh if you want the company will mail you a preloaded USB for an extra $20 . I would have gone that way except living in Canada I could see problems with extra charges or possible duties,

How did you download the files? I tried via Firefox, Edge and Chrome and get an error message with all stating the files are too large to download with the chosen Browser (22.5GB)? My impression is that, at 22.5GB, I'm attempting to download uncompressed files rather than compressed files.

I use Firefox and got a warning the file was to big as well. I got a pop up to tell me to use a program called "Megasync" I download that program and installed it and then download worked OK. I think that in the instructions it recommends using Mega https://mega.io/desktop. It is free but you have to sign up.

The download is a zip file but after unzipping it appears that nothing was compressed only place in the one download file.

If the files you're trying to "zip" are already compressed (and most distribution files are) then sometimes zipping them can actually end up make things a little larger. The advantage of zipping them anyhow is you end up with one file that can be downloaded and unzipped and everything ends up in the right place.

The zipped file is 18.7 GB and the unzipped files are 18.8 GB

If the files are already compressed then zipping them just adds the zip file overhead. The benefit is you have only one file to distribute.

If you could compress a compressed file, where would it end?
If you compress a file using one algorithm, what happens if you then try a different algorithm on the output file?

Had a 64GB thumbdrive but it is 3.0. Waiting for a 2.0 as called for in their documentation. Not pleased that they provided a link to the uncompressed files. They clearly have a business arrangement with Mega and they try to force you to create an account with them. More on that once I have the thumbdrive and success or failure with the install.
