Question Parking Brake on 2013 GLK

Does anyone know the app price to change the parking brakes. Quoted a few scary prices.

What doesn’t it do? I’m thinking it’s just stuck somewhere, free up what is stuck and use lubrication . Replacement is rare

Give us a symptom and we can give a better answer.
The problem is that they’re inside of the disks. The labor is more $ than just changing the rear main pads. Parts are inexpensive.
But those small shoes used for the parking brake almost never wear out. I had 155+ miles on mine without replacement. If they’re not holding, they can be easily adjusted without any disassembly. It’s unlikely, but possible, that a cable has come loose.

The pads are worn out hence the question, The original owner must have driven with the brake on, ignoring the warning on the dash.

How do you know that? Have you tried to adjust them?

Can I assume that you have either seen the parking brake shoes, that you hear metal on metal when they’re applied, or that you have tried adjusting them and they still won’t hold?
If so, I would recommend DIY if you have moderate mechanical ability and a place to do it safely. The parts are about $105 CA. If you have to get a shop to do it, I suspect a charge 10x that, which would include new rear main brake pads. A dealer might want $17-1800.

Rock Auto pads $31.24 CAD, hardware kit $15 to $30 CAD. It's an easy DIY or get any little garage you know and trust to do it. They're the same old design for the last 30+ years.
Mine fell apart from age and rust with 120,000 km (75,000 miles).

I had them inspected and yes they are worn out, cables etc all work fine. Also recommended new disc pads and maybe new discs as well. Sadly I do not have a place to do any repairs to the car

Two possibilities:
1) You really need all that work, or,
2) they adjust the brake shoes and charge you for all that work anyhow...

1) Required for my grand daughter to pass her drivers test as they test all safety equipment. Also living near the mountains and not one level street or road near my house it may be a good thing to spend some money. At least 3 times week I drive on a 2 KM hill with a 13% grade
2) Gone to 2 shops, first one brought me into the shop to show me and said to save money they could reuse the primary brake pads to save some money. Second shop is more expensive but they only use OEM parts, including when they do oil changes. Both shops have very high consumer ratings including BBB.

Both shops said that the brakes had already been adjusted to the max

Yes. They even do that down here in lackadaisical SE Texas.
You get 1000 kudos from this granddad of 5 successful drivers for letting the granddaughter use your car because it is safe and reliable. Sorry about the cost, but I can’t think of a better way to spend money.

I thought they self adjusted by going in reverse and hitting the brakes ?

IIRC on W/C204 there is no self-adjuster dog on the star wheel. I think that only applies to service brakes that have drums and shoes, not parking brakes.

Going on a approximate 6000 KM return trip in June with about 2500 KM in the Rocky mountains . So I think I will get the work done first week of May along with a service prior to the trip. An expensive start to the trip

First long trip in the GLK so will be interesting to see the fuel economy, or maybe not with the price of gas LOL

I would think 300$ for shoes and springs. And labor , not much more , it’s an easy job

That was one of the (very) pleasant surprises upon learning to live with my GLK (2011). It's rated at 21 MPG highway, which honestly came close to putting me off picking up one of these cars, no matter how pretty it might be. Imagine my glee when I found that with a light foot, I got 23.6 MPG combination (a fair bit of around town driving) on a 7,400 mile road trip. And that was burning regular, not premium (which is like picking up an additional 3MPG cost-wise, compared to burning premium).

I should add YMMV... ;-) If you use your gas pedal like the platform pedal on an elliptical machine at the gym, or if you are driving in mountains (in which case I would consider burning premium), you might not get the mileage I did (Arizona to Maine round trip).

LOL I had to convert 23.6 into world figures ie L/100Km but it seems very good. I understand the 2013 with the different engine is rated higher so fingers crossed. Getting around 11L/100KM in strictly city driving. app 21.38 US, too many short trips. Always use 93 or 94 octane in my cars. A few years ago drove through northern Montana and the car I drove cried because of the terrible fuel in the state. !/2 of my highway trip will be in northern states (Washington Idaho, Montana and North Dakota) return all in Canada. Will be on Highway 2 most of the way in the US driving the speed limit to avoid the numerous speed traps. Probably keep car in the C mode all the time.

I just bought the same parts. Under $75 CAD for shoes and hardware kit including shipping. Genuine MB of course will be more.
