Well, at 10am fired up GLK, shifted into Reverse, then Drive ... made the 1-1/2 hr trip no prob. After a couple hours, started up, then Reverse, then Drive, no problem on return trip home. So anticipated stress trip was fine.

I guess time will tell if the "no Reverse / Drive" issue shows up again.

Good to hear OP, hope it remains that way.

It was intermittent on our 2015 after about 150,000 miles. Always corrected after a restart. Never found the cause.

Steve, I had similar issues with my 2013 GLK. I learned there are three possible sources of this issue: 1) low battery voltage (primary and aux), 2) control cluster (shift mechanism on the steering column. And 3) the servo that changes gears at the transmission. This list is in increasing cost. I pulled the codes using a Carly scanner and leaned it was the cluster. It was a $675 part and required less than five minutes to replace. I was delighted as the servo assembly is very expensive.

Please pull the codes to help you diagnose the issue. Also, please stop driving the car as this issue can strand you. The ability to turn it off and then on and have the car function is not likely to be a long term workaround.

Software glitch perhaps.

Maybe we were just lucky, but never got stranded. I scanned for codes the first 5-6 times this happened with my Autel. I expected to see a shift cluster error, but nothing. I kept the scanner in the GLK to check real time data when the failure occurred, but it never did it again while I was driving.

Thanks .@Odd Piggy ... appreciate the detailed follow-up. A bit reasurring, considering you never had a code set (me either).

All the research I've done for the last few days has revealed zero consistent results. Well, except for "turn it off, then start again, and drive away". The wheel speed sensor YouTube I found made sense, but I'm sure that's not it here.

And, to reiterate, for us, this has NEVER happened before, and it ONLY happened once. Did I do anything in haste to "start and go" to get to my VA appointment? Remote chance, as one person suggested. But I don't think I did. Time will tell, as they say.

And hey, I'm driving the Jeep more often 👍
