Unhappy Mouse Stashed leaves and nuts in these 4 holes in the engine

Hi,
When i removed the cover of the engine, i noticed that a mouse or rat has gone under the cover and stored leaves, small nuts and other organic materials. Some material has gone into the open exposed holes, especially 3 & 4. There is also some engine oil in these holes. I removes as much as i can with Foreceps. Wondering what these holes are for and why they are exposed. Is the left over debris going to cause issues? What course of action would you guys recommend? Thank you in advance.

Is that a chew hole directly to the left of #1 beside the white label?

there is no Chew hole. The red circled spots are exposed. I can see inside the metal holes, it looks like this is by design. Not sure if its for air intake or cooling etc

I would vacume out the holes , spray on something like peppermint oil, and trap - poison the mice , if it’s in a garage it should be fairly easy to get rid of them . Seal up holes on the garage . If it’s outside it could be a battle . the worry is they eat your wires and hoses and do expensive damage . Maybe bolts are at the bottom of the holes .

That is the valve cover. It can be several different part numbers depending on your build date. For example A6510109118. Since you said there is oil in there you either need to replace the gasket or the entire cover. There's also two different gaskets. So you need to verify by VIN chassis.

It is also possible whoever has been filling the oil could have spilled some there.

Yes, that's what I was referring to.
