GLK to GLB / GLC
I currently own a 2015 GLK 350 4MATIC, and I absolutely love it—the size, power, comfort, and overall driving experience. However, I feel it’s time to move on to a newer Mercedes-Benz model.
I’m torn between the 2021 GLB 250 (which I really admire for its exterior and interior design) and the 2021 GLC (which, in my opinion, looks less appealing—especially the interior—compared to the GLB).
That said, I’ve heard quite a lot about cylinder head failures in the 260/264 engines, and it makes me hesitant. I’d like to know:
- How common are these issues in the GLB and GLC?
- Do these models truly compare with the GLK in terms of reliability and driving experience?

You might consider posting in the area (GLB, GLC) of the forum that best relates - I'd say there'd be more experience there with those classes
For example, here's a similar thread posted there, in the x253 section:

The GLB has been very serviceable for us. The layout is quite a bit different than the GLK. I haven’t compared data, but the GLB seems to have a bit more cargo room, or at least a better layout for us. We went with GLB because of the available 3rd row seats which were not an option on the GLC. The GLB has a longer wheel base than the GLK, so pitching motions of the GLK we experienced on secondary roads is absent. We like the GLB.
Do be aware that the GLB250 has 220 HP where the GLK350 had either 268 HP or 302 HP depending on the year. The GLB also has a Dual Clutch Transmission (DTC8). That has been no issue at all to us, but some have complained that they cannot get comfortable with the “manual transmission feel” when accelerating from a stop.
Now the bad news: The M260/M264 cylinder head failure is real and happens on many models through the 2022 model year. Ours was covered under the original warranty and there is an extended warranty on the GLB (but not the GLC) in the U.S. Carefully investigate whether or not there is coverage in your country. A 2021 model of either SUV will be past the original warranty coverage. DO NOT BUY A 2021 GLB or GLC WITHOUT GOOD WARRANTY COVERAGE. After 2022, the GLC got a different engine and the GLB got upgraded heads. My suggestion, if it is within your means, would be to move the GLB/GLC comparison up to 2023 models to avoid the engine issues.
