Question Oil level warning

Looked everywhere but can't find an answer.
Hasn't happened to me but if low oil message comes on is it because of oil pressure or level.

If it is the oil level, how liters to bring up to full?

I do check my oil on a semi regular basis but it never goes down.

If it’s the oil level warning, you will need to add about 1/2 qt of oil and see if the warning goes away. If not, add another 1/2 qt. Your cars oil level should never drop unless it has a big leak or burns a lot of oil.

If it’s an oil pressure warning, I’m sure it’s a different warning, because low oil pressure is a very bad thing. You will want to shut off the engine immediately until you can figure out why it’s happening.

A low oil pressure warning because of a low oil level probably will never happen.

Believe it or not, there is no oil pressure sensor...

It's a level sensor. Use the dipstick to figure out how much to add. It's 1 liter (about 1 quart) between "full" and "add" on the dipstick. I'll bet the warning doesn't come on until at least another quart low beyond "add".

Hard to believe there is no pressure sensor, but in 50 years of driving I never had a pressure warning. I have always kept a liter of oil in my cars,, just in case but never needed it.

I have. Twice. Once it was low oil level. The other time it was a faulty sensor. I was a young kid. Pulled into a service station (remember them?) and the guy checked the oil level (it was good). Bad sensor, he said. Then, he pointed to the sensor and there was a drop of oil on the end of it.

I was going to post the same thing. I know my M271 didn’t have one. But the M276 has an oil pressure sensor listed. I was wondering if what’s listed as a pressure sensor is just the level sensor misidentified.

If you have a scanner, see if it supports an oil pressure readout. If it doesn't, it's almost certainly because it's not available.

That's certainly a safe bet, but I'll bet dollars to donuts if it were to trigger a low oil warning it would be down more than one quart.

If y'all read the original post, it has not even happened. It's a hypothetical question.

Well, consider the answers hypothetical, too!

My GLS has three warnings: Check at next fuel stop, Add one quart, and stop the engine right now. I assume you have to ignore the first two to get to the third. The GLK has only the first one. The manual says "The engine oil level has dropped to the minimum level."

I used to get a warning light on my 350SDL once in a while. It was usually down a little more than a quart.
