sad thing is most of the dealers dont even know what it is or how to explain it.

i was at mercedes anaheim and took the gl450 out, i was asking the sales dude about it...first he thought i was talking about the headlight system....i was like no not that one

then he managed to explain the lane tracking system to me....strong work reza go do some home work .

ACS = a confused salesperson

The thing that bugs me about the active curve system is that there is no reason it shouldn't be standard. There isn't a person who would prefer the ride without it! Its a condemnation of mercedes drivers and dealers that so few GLs have it. Its not that expensive an option for a car in this price bracket.

Most of the GLs tested by car magazines have ACS. Mercedes corporate knows....

I custom ordered my GL 550 with active curve system and waited two months, and when it finally showed up it didn't have active curve. I complained about it to my dealer and he said "oh I thought you meant the lights that swivel". So I had to reorder it and wait another two months!

mind-blowing how often custom orders are screwed up. it's basic administrative work. not that hard.

we have a 13'GL 550 with pretty much everything except ACS
and a 14'GL 63 which has ACS

until you feel ACS you dont know what you'r missing - I mean both these cars have a lot in common but ACS changes the drive significantly

if you can, def order it with ACS

looks like the 14GL63 is gonna have to be replaced with a 17'GLS63 soon (long story)
but ACS in a truck this size makes a difference you cant imagine..
no I'm not exagerrating, its a must have, trust me

If you added the active curve system to a 450 did you include ADS Adaptive dampening system too? Is it required?

I believe with the 2013-2016 cars yes. ACS required ADS (which comes with the offroad package as well).

For the new GLS they all have ADS standard.

no dynamic select is driving mode
ADS was standard on 550s and 63s before and may have been on 450s but not sure
ACS requires ADS
once you drive it with ACS TRUST ME -- you will get it.. significant difference

Besides, I have other cars for my sporty driving.

I hate to chime in here, but this particular "SUV" the SRT8 Grand Cherokee that I owned was sporty, had run flat tires, huge brakes, did 0-60 in under 5 seconds and had a track mode. I was even able to spend a day at Texas Motor Speedway being trained by former race car drivers on how to drive this thing properly. That training was a free addon when you buy it. I won't say where, but somewhere on an empty highway in the middle of nowhere Montana, I had this car doing well over 160. All those things combined make it sporty to me. The 700+ Horsepower version of this is coming soon and I promise you...most who drive it would agree that it is "sporty".

I imagine that the Biturbo AMG version of the GLS would be pretty sporty as well, though I have not driven one.

+1 Good for you taking to the track. Its such a great learning environment irregardless of the car.

I agree completely w/you. "Sporty" is very much a matter of tuning (throttle, suspension, steering, brakes etc.) not the category of car. Merc SLs and BMW 6 series look sporty but are really tuned for comfort. GLs are tuned for comfort, but they're still German by design which means they're built to handle sustained travel at high speeds. I really do like our GL, but it took me some time to appreciate the comfort/performance balance. I predict BMW's forthcoming X7 is going to stir the pot a bit. Hopefully MB will have a new GL out by then. The GLS is just a refresh.

The SRT Driving experience was a great opportunity, and TBH, something about getting the SRT8 GC into a 100mph 4 wheel slide on a road course made it the most exciting SRT8 to drive that day also. So I agree with your statement.

That said, I've held off on a HC purchase due to the rumors of the Jeep version. So, 2017 looks like it will be an exciting year for me, as I already have a "deposit" down for the 2nd to arrive at the local dealership.

And I still have my Magnum SRT8, except now it's an 800HP 4500lb wagon that's hurts a lot of feelings at the track and on the street... Lol

Have to disagree. A extremely heavy car, pushing 6,000 lbs, with seating for 7, combined with a high center of gravity does not translate to "sporty" characteristics. Doesn't matter how quick those 0-60 times are. Better yet, look at 60-0 braking distance to give you a better idea of what "sporty" means, or numbers on a skidpad.

Well, at least you were correct about skippad. 50% accuracy ain't bad.

Even though we used words like “good” and “respectable” to describe the vehicle’s acceleration, we can use the term “phenomenal” to describe the Mercedes‘ 60-0 braking distance. It only needed 104 feet to stop. That is comparable to braking distances Motor Trend has recorded for sports cars, and is better than the Porsche Cayman R’s 108-foot braking distance. (That same 335i also stopped from 60 mph in 108 feet.).

Haha, nice. You're also referencing an AMG GL63. Not quite what 99% of us are buying. Still pretty cool nonetheless.

I still stand by my previous statement. You can only do so much with such a heavy vehicle. Still very impressive but would never consider it "sporty" per se.

Here is Car and driver with a GL550 70-0 braking vs a Toyota Camry.

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...ic-test-review

Exact same braking numbers for both but a big difference in skidpad numbers.

And for reference an AMG63 vs Cayman GTS

Basically, the braking of the GL63 is ridiculous, but MB can only do so much. The skid pad numbers are the same as a Toyota Camry. And nowhere near the Cayman.

Ordered GLS450 today with ACS. I hope this will make me carry fewer ziploc's.

"Throw-up with body roll" came as a "Standard option" with my wife and 6 yr old.

Your order has validated my post. That's one down!

I couldn't help noticing your garage. I have a 13' 450, a 991 carrera and a wonderful 7 year old daughter who loves riding in the back of the 911. My wife misses her X6 and feels the GL (without ADS or ACS) is too floaty. Not sure if you're in the same boat (pun intended). But she and I both love the car for its size and comfort.

Best of luck with the new GLS. I'm sure you and the family will love it.

Regards,
DRP

Wow, lot of similarities My 6 yr old loves the 991 too, its mostly drop offs and pick-ups from school. Your post definitely weighed in, for me getting ACS. I had an X5 diesel before but my wife likes the smooth and nimble ride of GL and I'm pretty sure she'll appreciate it more with ACS.

My salesman says that ACS uses front camera's for its intended purpose! Is that true? Haven't read or heard anywhere.

@drpesq: Changed the build to 550, same options.
