Correct tire pressure for 21 inch wheels?

I recently noticed my 550 has 32 psi written as normal tire pressure on the inside of the gas tank lid. My tires were always pumped to 38-40 psi, because that's how it originally came. Which is correct? Should I deflate to 32 psi?

I am using 39 PSI in my 450 GLS, mainly for the extra suspension "spring" of the higher inflation pressures (i.e., firmer).

I am also getting 20 MPG on moderate trips in the city....
