Real world MPG GLD 450 vs 550.

Pondering which one to get. Love the looks of the 550 but concerned the MPG will be too poor. Let me know your results.

My real world MPG for a 550 is generally between 17 and 18 and I do a 50-50 mix of highway and city. If it is a pure highway drive then I usually am between 20 and 21

Thanks, not bad for a 550 and certainly acceptable for a big SUV.

I am sitting on 21MPG long term average in my GLS.
On a recent round trip to Ca and back to Texas, I averaged 29 MPG in my GLS 450.

Wow, that's as good as the old 350 diesel but, most likely, without the issues that saddle the OM642.

Drive from PA to MO and couple weeks later back from MO to PA. Late Aug, truck full of stuff each direction.

Hell of a cruiser that is fun to drive in stop in go as well (using distronic).

Good to see everyone getting better than EPA MPG estimates. The 450 clearly gets better mileage but the 550 looks even more amazing and has the more powerful engine. This is going to be a difficult decision.

2024 GLS 580. Formerly 2015 GL 550, 2003 S430.
550

Stats for my GL550 for over 60,000 miles. Mixed driving but with weight towards city. But i LOVE the power of the 550 engine!

The 550 tops at 21mpg highway at around 70mph, I take a lot of loooong trips. I avg around 16 mpg too in mixed driving. Would not trade for a 450 for any reason. It has a ton more power, handles a lot better (active roll bar), brakes better and rides plushly. You do pay a lot more but once you factor in allthe standard equipment you end up paying about 10k for a lot more engine, better suspension and much better brakes in that light it price is more than justified.

The engine and options was a deal closer. Yes, it will be more expensive to drive but the 63 will have more smiles per hour

14 MPG self calculated on a 550. 44k miles here with probably 70% city. It's a beast.

The city is definitely not friendly to the 550. However the 450 would probably only provide 2-3 mpg under the same conditions. To get any decent milage on the GLS takes diesel and even then its nothing to write home about. It will be interesting to see how the new 450 mild hybrid works out. Its hard to make 3 tons "green".

And yet, I am averaging 20.7 MPG overall............with nearly 30 on the highway in a GLS 450.

I'm happy with the mileage on the 550. The Toyota Sienna we had before was averaging 14.5 mpg under the same conditions.

It's hard to compare with others simply based on how people calculate their mileage and driving styles, city v highway, etc. Anyways, love the 550.

Got the GL63 in a few days ago. Love this truck. It does things that a vehicle this big should not be able to do and is a total blast to drive. When the warranty is up, I plan to add an ECU tune or do a turbo upgrade. Last GL I purchased was a 2007 GL450 in 2007. This is a quantum leap in terms or power, luxury, and handling. The 63 is an ethereal driving experience. I highly recommend it.
