2017 GLS450 reliability

I am looking at getting an used 17' GLS 450. I will have ~1 year warranty and wanted to reach into the collective community for guidance/feedback.

We are a family of Japanese cars (Toyota) and and have no experience with German cars. I really like the full sized 7 seats on the 450 and the the few years used ones fall in my price point.

Hoping the collective can help with advice!

1. Is the GLS 450 reliable for the long term? I usually keep my cars for 10-11 years and generally hear of german cars having major expenses as they age.
2. What are typical maintenance costs, and what are the key milestones (is it same 45k/60/75) and ballpark costs? Toyota's have major expenses only in the 90-100K range with timing belt etc.
3. Is this car DIY for basic maintenance? I do all my oil changes. Is it fairly easy on the 450 as well?

Thanks!
John

GLS 550
I don't know if this helps, but I have a 2017 GLS 550 with about 58K miles on it.

1) We plan on keeping our vehicle for at least 10 years, other then regularly scheduled maintenance we had no major problems with the car. We did have a problem with the TPMS on one of the wheels but it was taken care of without a problem.

2) Replaced tires after 35k miles - cost:$1100, regular oil change every 10K - cost: ( Service A $256.92 , Service B $ don't remember but its more then A), 45K service cost more since i had to replace the Sparkpulgs ( $400).

3) I usually change out the cabin air filters and the engine air filter myself before the 10K intervals. ( it's not hard)

My wife is the one that drives the GLS and she loves it and wouldn't want anything else. Hope this helps.

Spoiler

I bought a lease turn-in 2017, GLS450. It had 54k miles and a spotless VMI with no issues and to the book service. I've put on over 50K miles her in under a year and have had no mechanical issues whatsoever. I do all my own maintenance (oil changes, brakes, spark plugs, air and in cabin filter, tranny fluid and built into the pan filter) with the exception of wheels and tires, alignments and more recently, motor and transmission mounts that I enlisted the help if an indy to perform.

So,
1. If the history continued, I don't see why it would not run your term. My term is 250k within the next 2 years.
2. I paid $900 for the tranny and motor mounts labor the mounts themselves I purchased from FCP and a MB Dealer on Amazon (OEM parts). I do the same for oil, air, cabin, wiper blades and all other maintenance items. 0w40 Mobil1 is cheap at Walmart, $19.99 - $25.99.
3. Yes, it is an easy vehicle to work on. DIY VIDS are not so common but info can be found from drivers such as myself.

Good luck.

We have a 2017 GLS450. Bought it used at the end of 17 with approx 25k miles. We now have 80k + miles on it with no issues. Regular maintenance and we just did all 4 brakes (pads/rotors). My wife drives it primarily and it is the weekend family hauler. We also tow a horse trailer approximately 2x a month. Just added wheels/tires since it needed new tires anyways. We are very pleased with our GLS450.

You may get more realistic responses from the x164 section since there'll be more people with higher mileage GL's than the x166 section. My observation across the GL/GLS forums is that its hit or miss in reliability. Some people, like above, have very few problems while some have many mechanical and electrical issues. I'd expect to pay double for repairs and maintenance compared to your Toyotas. If you can turn a wrench and do a good portion of maintenance or repairs, you'll be fine. I think you can hope for a GLS as reliable as a Toyota, but don't believe its a high probability.

My GL has been on the more problematic side of the spectrum but I'll be a repeat buyer. The equivalent sized Toyota can't remotely compete with the GL in terms of ride quality, power, or quietness inside.

Totally different cars including engines, transmissions, etc. IMHO x164 reliability (or luck of it) is irrelevant to that of x166 (same as w164 to w166).

1. Hard to say as model was only introduced 4 years ago so not much data yet on high mileage vehicle. I bought my GLS 450 new in Oct 2016 and it now has 49k miles. I hesitate to tempt fare but it is the best vehicle I have every owned. Zero problems, almost no warranty fixes - runs and drives great. I plan to keep it to 100k or maybe longer.

But the big test will be the 50k-100k period as that's when seals, gaskets and other parts tend to wear down and leak. Based on my experience with BMWs, I would not want to own a German car out of warranty unless you are ok with spending $2k-3k per year on maintenance.

2. In expensive California, A service typically runs $100 Indy/$300 Dealer, B service is $250/$600. At 50k you will also need spark plugs. A set of 4 tires will run $1000-1200 installed at Costco - typically these last for 40k miles but that varies depending on the tire model and your driving habits. There are other threads with maintenance schedules - I think normally you alternative A/B every 10k miles or so. Brakes here are $600 or so per axel and should last 30k depending on driving. Whatever you pay for Toyota/honda - just take that price and double it.

3. I can't DIY so no comment.
