2017 GLS450 reliability
We are a family of Japanese cars (Toyota) and and have no experience with German cars. I really like the full sized 7 seats on the 450 and the the few years used ones fall in my price point.
Hoping the collective can help with advice!
1. Is the GLS 450 reliable for the long term? I usually keep my cars for 10-11 years and generally hear of german cars having major expenses as they age.
2. What are typical maintenance costs, and what are the key milestones (is it same 45k/60/75) and ballpark costs? Toyota's have major expenses only in the 90-100K range with timing belt etc.
3. Is this car DIY for basic maintenance? I do all my oil changes. Is it fairly easy on the 450 as well?
Thanks!
John

1) We plan on keeping our vehicle for at least 10 years, other then regularly scheduled maintenance we had no major problems with the car. We did have a problem with the TPMS on one of the wheels but it was taken care of without a problem.
2) Replaced tires after 35k miles - cost:$1100, regular oil change every 10K - cost: ( Service A $256.92 , Service B $ don't remember but its more then A), 45K service cost more since i had to replace the Sparkpulgs ( $400).
3) I usually change out the cabin air filters and the engine air filter myself before the 10K intervals. ( it's not hard)
My wife is the one that drives the GLS and she loves it and wouldn't want anything else. Hope this helps.

So,
1. If the history continued, I don't see why it would not run your term. My term is 250k within the next 2 years.
2. I paid $900 for the tranny and motor mounts labor the mounts themselves I purchased from FCP and a MB Dealer on Amazon (OEM parts). I do the same for oil, air, cabin, wiper blades and all other maintenance items. 0w40 Mobil1 is cheap at Walmart, $19.99 - $25.99.
3. Yes, it is an easy vehicle to work on. DIY VIDS are not so common but info can be found from drivers such as myself.
Good luck.

I'm also extremely a DIY person my self.
Just do it .

My GL has been on the more problematic side of the spectrum but I'll be a repeat buyer. The equivalent sized Toyota can't remotely compete with the GL in terms of ride quality, power, or quietness inside.

But the big test will be the 50k-100k period as that's when seals, gaskets and other parts tend to wear down and leak. Based on my experience with BMWs, I would not want to own a German car out of warranty unless you are ok with spending $2k-3k per year on maintenance.
2. In expensive California, A service typically runs $100 Indy/$300 Dealer, B service is $250/$600. At 50k you will also need spark plugs. A set of 4 tires will run $1000-1200 installed at Costco - typically these last for 40k miles but that varies depending on the tire model and your driving habits. There are other threads with maintenance schedules - I think normally you alternative A/B every 10k miles or so. Brakes here are $600 or so per axel and should last 30k depending on driving. Whatever you pay for Toyota/honda - just take that price and double it.
3. I can't DIY so no comment.
