Bought GLS350d Water Damage

Hi all,

Recently bought a 2018 GLS350d (X166) that previously had hail damage repaired. However, when I received the car there was no power whatsoever to it, i.e. not even a light on the overhead panel, nothing. Upon further inspection and taking to specialised auto electrician water damage was found in battery compartment under driver's seat (Australian version). Both the main fuse box next to battery compartment (Part A1665402350) and the prefuse box under the hood which sits under the red plastic cover on the +ve battery jump start terminal were replaced (Part A1665405202). I believe this is where the main pyrofuse is located and will blow in case of airbag deployment or in my case overload in Battery Management System due to short. Now that both fuse boxes have been replaced, power appears to be ok under the hood, all fuses working as expected. However, down in the main fuse box under floor, there is still no power, i.e. there are large 30A, 40A fuses down there that still have no power when battery is connected. The electrical system appears to start up and then shuts itself down immediately, with no fuses blown. So potentially could be a control module ? Battery has been tested and is OK.

The car is now going to be stripped further, but was wondering if anyone had a similar experience with fixing water damage issues on these cars. I have read numerous posts, mainly from USA, where water damaged REAR SAM module and caused all sorts of issues. From the paperwork it appears the car had intermittent electrical problems (RHR tail lamp flickering, rear indicators not working all the time, sunroof motor not working, car stuck in Park) prior to car completely shutting down. I believe this would indicate issue with REAR SAM but just not sure if this could cause no power at all to the car ?

Anyway I'll keep this forum update once I have more news. Thanks all.

Here in the US, any car that has any history of water damage can be classified by the insurance company as a salvage vehicle. There is a reason for that - water damaged vehicles have all sorts of hidden problems that will plague the car for many years to come. I am not being helpful but your car might be a money pit. Good luck.
