ELW or not.

Hello all,

I have a 2018 GLS 450 with 49100 miles on it. About 90 miles left to run out of warranty. Bought the car two years ago with 39,000 miles and have meticulously maintained it ever since. Till about 3 months ago, it was just a weekend car but now that I have decided to go back to work, I put in about 25 miles a day. I am on the fence to buy an extended warranty or not. All of my other cars did not have any extended warranty but since this is the first time I am buying a luxury German brand, kind of not sure if I should buy the warranty or not.

Are there any folks here that has not bought the extended warranty? A quick search shows pretty much everyone recommending buying the ELW.. I plan on keeping this car for another 3-4 years as well. Many thanks in advance.

I'm not a warranty guy. I bought our GLS450 new in Feb, 2017. It's got 50k miles on it now with nothing but recommended maintenance and tires. An ELW is just insurance. They wouldn't be in business if they didn't make more than they pay out. I'm fine to be self-insured when it comes to vehicles. In the end, it's just about risk tolerance.

To help your decision, I can provide a quote and example contract for a manufactures extension courtesy of Freedom Warranty, 5, 6, 7 yr / up to 100,000 miles, accepted by all Mercedes-Benz dealers in North America. Text or call me at (602) 909-9216 or by email at tgibson@highline-autos.com

A good third party will have the same coverage as the ELM for less money, the manufactures extensions I provide offer the same coverage, but without the $$$ the dealer throws on top. I have information comparing the two coverages and our policies are accepted by all Mercedes-Benz dealers in North America.

There are very few good aftermarket warranties and they don't make money paying for repairs or readily handing money out. I would trust MB ELW over everyone else. The good companies that sell policies for MB's are crazy expensive. The ELW from MB is probably the cheapest good policy you can get that is truly accepted at all MB shops in the US without having to prove you followed the manufacturers recommend service level to a T and that you did not go 1 mile or 1 day over the MB service interval. I have read that some aftermarket warranty companies look for and will use ANYTHING to deny your claim. With the MB ELW, you won't have to fight with the warranty company about MB's hourly rates or what they will cover and the MB dealer will give you a loaner car to drive while it is in the shop. Tried to rent a car recently? If not, you should look at the rental rates and factor this benefit into your decision.

Call around to other dealers for pricing on ELW's since the price can vary quite a bit. There is plenty of info on who to call so do a search on the forums.

If you do decide on a non MB warranty company, check out their BBB ratings and read what other customers have to say. If it is bad or the warranty company is defensive, it is a sign that you should stay away. In addition, make sure you choose a company backed by an actual insurance company with a good insurance rating and they are licensed to operate in your state.

Maybe too late for OP but I agree 100% with last post. Cursory research on aftermarket warranties will find a pile of consumer complaints stretching a mile high. By contrast MBZ is literally bumper to bumper except wear items like tires, brakes, spark plugs etc.

my car had Zero problems through 49k miles but I knew - based on 3 decades of German cars - that problems generally arrive between 50-100k. So I bought the 7/100k ELW.

Sure enough at 60k our GLS started to shake like an earthquake. Dealer could not diagnose the problem and had to reach out to Mercedes after 3 days. Ended up replacing fuel injectors which would probably have run $3k or more with all the time invested. My cost was $0 thanks to warranty. Anything else breaks and I will be playing with house money

of course it’s a roll of the dice but if you are going to buy ELW don’t be penny wise pound foolish, go to one of the Benz dealers recommended on this board and get the manufacturer ELW.

Care to share this 'valuable' information on which aftermarket is far better? You have negated the MB twice in this thread and given no indication of what is better. Is this simply a secret?

just a heads up - you have to buy wheel and tire at the time of sale of your vehicle. Most finance managers don’t know that. I learned the hard way. I’ve come to find out most finance managers don’t know much about the legal details. The only person I trust is Jeff Jackson in Louisville. He educated me on how wheel and tire works. I tried to ask him a reasonable range of price and he said he can’t give out that info. Plus I live in FL and the price is set here on wheel and tire.

If you didn’t buy your car from his store your claim will get denied. You need to call him and get your money back if that’s the case.
