Passenger Airbag ON/OFF indicator

Passenger Airbag ON/OFF indicator
I have been through manuals and multiple web search and I can’t figure out what is correct.
While in passenger seat of my 2017 GLS, my wife noticed indicator and had never seen it on before.
Questions
If there is no one or nothing in passenger seat, should passenger airbag indicator be displaying OFF?
if adult sized passenger is in seat there should be no indicator or should it display ON?

DBMC - just did - on my MY18 GLS450 - the Passenger light illuminates and stays on - I thought it did but just checked again - also shifted back and forth from D to R just to check .. the light stays on
