Front brakes DIY

Any gotchas? According to FCP Euro, you do not grease the pins on the front brakes…

Thanks!

Not greasing the pins is also consistent with the M-B WIS instructions. (Also applies to rear brakes.)

If you don't mind, could you provide the link to the FCP Euro site where this information is provided? I'm curious to see what other things are discussed there.

FYI, there is a very long thread on rear brake DIY here: https://mbworld.org/forums/gl63-amg-...tors-pads.html. Some of the information there would also be applicable to front brakes. FWIW, I find the front brakes to be easier than the rears -- better access in the wheel well, no parking brake to move into service position. Only downside is that the front brake rotors are larger and heavier.

Ah, yes. It's no fun (and possibly damaging to wheel bearings) to have to pound on the rotors to dislodge them. This is a big issue in high-salt and high-humidity environments (e.g. USA-New England, USA-Florida); less so in dryer environments (US-California). The Brembo and Zimmerman rotors have a coating that seems to help with this.

I did the fronts on ours about a year ago, no issues or gotchas. I went with Zimmerman rotors and they've performed flawlessly.

I liberally coat the backside of the rotor and the hub with antiseize. It can be incredibly difficult to remove seized rotors. In fact, the first time I changed the rotors on my 63 I broke one of the rotors in half before it would come off. I even soaked the backside with PB Blaster to no avail.
