my 2018 GLS550 (63k) has started doing this. I've got CEL codes: P073E (Unable to engage reverse), and P07B7 (Transmission park position sensor/switch "A" circuit intermittent/erratic). After parking overnight, the CEL was gone. I brought the car to the dealer and an independent shop, who both could not replicate the issue.
a few drives later, it happened again. I noticed that it occurs when auto start/stop feature stops the engine at a stop. at that time, the car (in comfort mode) goes from D2, to N, and it does not allow me to switch back to D gear... unless i change into Sport Mode, then is changes to D3, and then only D3-D5 gears are only available.
Long story short, the MB dealer could not officially diagnose the problem. Even with the CEL codes above, recommendations from an indy shop, and cases from this forum, my service advisor (SA) said MB policy is not to repair, but to replace. Knowing I had 3rd party warranty thru SilverRock, I was skeptical based on prior experiences, and expected partial coverage at most.
The SA and the technician took detailed photos that showed tiny metal parts in the transmission oil pan, and included the detailed service history (trans service done at 60K) presented the claim to Silverrock. Suprisingly, the new transmission and torque converter was covered with only deductible due.
Obviously I'm pleased with the work my SA has done on my behalf, as dealing with these warranty companies are time consuming and difficult. The new transmission is now covered under MB warranty for 2 years, unlimited miles.
Further discussions with the SA and tech- they both speculate it is the valve body within the transmission... and further steps if not covered would've been to go to a transmission specialist as MB does not repair. Fortunately, I did not have to take that route.
