Distronic Question

I've never had a car with distronics. What safeguards are in place when you back up (e.g., what activates it)?
Thank you.

Distronic is the adaptive cruise control. Can you be a little clearer about your concern? The question doesn't make much sense.

Today I was backing up. The alarm came on, but it could have been an alarm because the 2nd row seat had become unlocked after I inadvertently hit the button with groceries. Another vehicle had darted behind me after I started backing up. But I guess it was me braking the second I heard the alarm.

Sounds like the cross traffic alert

If blind spot assist is not deactivated, cross traffic warning will sound when you are backing up and car is about to cross your path. It is not properly a Distronic function, but uses the proximity sensors of blind spot assist.

Suggest checking out Manual for all the features you have and how they work.

Too much technology sometimes and nomenclature to learn

Yes, it was the cross traffic alert. I'm really loving these safety features. But I know some people do not and turn it off.

It will not only issue a warning but brake the car. First time it happened to me I thought I'd hit something!

Yesterday, the brake nanny freaked out as I was in a lane gently curving to the left, passing a stopped truck. It apparently thought I was aiming for the truck (I wasn't) and slammed on the brakes. It almost got me rear-ended.

Is it possible to disable "braking" part of rear cross traffic alert? So that it alerts you but does not engage the brakes? Probably not, but it would be interesting to know if it's possible

This is what happened and I also thought I hit something but the car going by just kept going. My heart was beating so fast I stopped at the next exit to look at my car. I wish when people saw someone pulling out of a parking place they would stop instead of continuing to travel and just hope the car backing up stopped.
I don't plan to disable anything. I need all the help I can get obviously.
