Soft-close doors

What are your thoughts on the Soft-Close Doors option? Is it worth it...?

A gaggle of MB's
It's a great feature to have if you have Kid's - solves the "jumped into the back seat but didn't close the door all the way" - and on trips if someone is napping - great NOT have to be firm with the door so you don't wake the sleeper(s) !

I've had it on multiple cars and, so far, it has very little worth other than it is a neat feature.

It's a no-brainer worthwhile addition.

If I had to do it over, I would add it to my build. The doors are quite heavy and I feel are designed with that feature in mind.

If they are part of an option package I guess they are ok, but are definitely NOT worth paying extra money for. I had them on my last car (2018 BMW M550) and never used the feature once. I found it unnatural to change the way you would normally close your door so that the soft close would come into play. Also, unless you tell them, your passengers aren’t going to know you have soft close doors and aren’t going to close your doors lightly.

Its worth noting that another member on this forum had posted that he wished he had gotten the soft close doors because they are tougher to close than typical doors. The subsequent responses hypothesized that this may have been because the doors were designed to use the soft closing mechanical system.

With that being said I would probably not spend the extra money since there was an issue with the soft close doors from BMW that had severed someone’s finger. But I trust Mercedes implementation far more than BMW but maybe they share the same parts supplier. The softclose doors are standard on the GLS580 I ordered so I didn’t have a choice.

That is precisely my reasoning, thanks for highlighting it

the only downside to soft close door is that once you get used to it, whichever car that you don't have that feature, you'll be leaving it unclosed all the time.
I have it on every vehicle with that option offered.. one car that I couldn't get it with soft close, I constantly leave it unclosed all the way every time I exit.

I love the soft close option.

Utterly unnecessary. Particularly since most passengers slam the door anyway! My E43 does have them while my GLS does. I end up forgetting which door to slam!
I think more than anything they just covers up how tinny modern mercedes doors sound. That old reassuring bank vault sound has been absent from mercedes vehicles for more than a decade. In fact its a measure of progress doors are much lighter while providing better protection than ever due to better materials and much better overall safety cell construction!

580 here, so no choice. My first auto with soft close doors and I really like them. My wife can sometimes not close the door hard enough so this takes care of that. Also, taking my son home from the hospital we were able to take advantage to keep him comfy and not feel the door closing in his ears. 😊 Similar with keeping quiet not to wake him when traveling as well. For this vehicle, I don't care if they are slammed anyway really. If this is going to damage the door I think my focus would be on the much bigger problem of safety in a side impact collision. 😅 Either way no one who I ride with would slam a door with disregard like that anyway. They also DEFINITELY know not to slam the door on my SS. 😂

The doors on my GLS580 feel about twice as heavy as my old GL450. Soft close is worth it.

Had it on couple of my Range Rovers and before that BMW X5 and now on the GLS450. I can’t imagine buying a car without it as we are so used to it. Kids don’t slam the doors anymore and I feel a bit better knowing that even a slight push will close the door.

haha... why would you not want it?
even if you have this option, you can still slam the door if you want to.
if you forget to slam it all the way, the soft close option finishes the job for ya.

all kiddings aside, one of the better everyday option in my opinion.
