Procedure for Factory order from east coast dealership

Hello.

i had a pre order of gls in feb and prod date of June. It is delayed due to chip shortage but dealership told me it went to Baltimore port and then got Shipped back to Alabama due to chip shortage.

I thought it was strange because if it’s missing a chip then why did it go to Baltimore ? And I am in ny and why did it go to port? The manager then called me and said sales doesn’t know how to read the screen and said it was not assembled and we just need to wait.

what exactly is the normal car release procedure from mb after Alabama ? Do they built half in Alabama and hand it off to Baltimore to build a few more components, before it gets to ship it to New York from Baltimore ?

thanks

Baltimore has a port facility that will offload cars being shipped from Germany and will do the prep on them. They then get shipped to the dealership from their. My 2020 GLS was shipped from a prep facility in AL to my dealer in DC directly. It didn’t go through Baltimore but there was a step in between the finish of production and the actual shipment. Maybe your sales team saw the status had changed to “In Prep” or something and just assumed that meant Baltimore?

The vehicles go to the VPC (Vehicle Preparation Center) from the factory. These are located by the ports to handle all the incoming cars not just the domestically built cars. Certain options are installed at the VPC, they are often referred to as port installed options. Homelink and the wheel locks for example are port installed options. VPCs are extensions of the factory. They have complete body shops for example to repair and touchup damages that occurred after the car left the factory. Sometimes missing parts are also installed at the VPC instead of the car being delayed at the factory.

Alabama is it's own VPC.

Correct, there are 5 VPCs in the USA. Brunswick, GA, Baltimore, MD, Long Beach, CA, Ladson, SC and Vance, AL. They serve different regions of the country, so the VPC the car goes to depends on the dealership location.
