Will GLS come as a plug in hybrid?

We will electrify the whole portfolio of Mercedes-Benz; the 48 voltage will be the basis [for that]. We will have a plug-in in every car [model line] and we will have on top [of that] – including smart – 10... pure battery/electric vehicles by the end of 2022.”

Does this mean that the GLS will get a plug in hybrid? That would be so sick!

Maybe in Europe, but for the US, Benz hasn't prioritized PHEV's but rather EV's. The previous PHEV C, GLC, and S-Class' did not do well here in the states.

Thanks for the info!

I read somewhere that it’s important in China with a PHEV that can go 90km (55 miles?).

As a Swede, I know that it’s Volvo’s fortune that it has very little competition for 3 row SUVs with PHEV, but it’s a much smaller brand.

It’s a bit unfortunate, because I don’t quite think any society really is ready for all EVs. A good PHEV can be a fantastic compliment. I was looking at the 580 long PHEV which seems to be a fantastic car, but with three kids and often longer drives to sport games with more passengers etc, I just don’t want to give up the two extra seats I currently have…

The EQS SUV isn’t coming with three rows either, right?

I'm not sure about the EQS SUV. Not much info is known as to whether it will be a five or seven seater, but I would hope it will have seven, MB was able to squeeze seven seats in the EQB (which is an EV GLB) so I imagine they could do it for the EQS SUV but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I am so excited to see how the EQS SUV comes out! I almost bought the Sedan version the other week, but decided to wait .

BTW, is it clear to you guys what Källenius means when he says that every “Model Line” will have a plug-in alternative? Is the GLS one model line and GLE another, for example?

Eight years ago it would’ve made sense for Mercedes to move heavily into PHEV. They should have. But it’s too late to go that way now, and they are obviously only focusing on EV going forward.

Perhaps, but I think the PHEV could rebound a bit. Progress will storm forward, but everyone’s needs differ so much.
