Where does your dog ride?

Hi all,

It looks like a dog is in our families immanent future, mostly likely a Rhodesian Ridgeback which is pretty large.

We make probably (5) six hour drives a year, with our 2 kids and will be bringing the dog too. We need use full trunk for these trips and wonder it's its practical to assume the dog can ride between the rear seat captains chairs on the floor. For those with experience, how do you travel with your dog?

Really appreciate any advise!

We have always had a pair of Golden Retrievers (no kids), now on numbers 6 & 7, and for the last 23 years we've made two cross country trips each year, once to Santa Fe, once to Nantucket. They always ride in the middle row. That is why we ordered the bench seat instead of the club chairs. Our gear goes in the way back. Have done this trip with 3 X5's, 2 X6's, and 2 full-size Range Rovers. Our plan for the GLS 580 is to put the third row down, the pups in the middle row, and our gear in the back.

We were thinking about a Rhodesian Ridgeback which are pretty large at 70-85lb, but we're starting to get cold feet about the practicality of things as we dig deeper. Fitting in the car with 2 kids and luggage is one of the bigger issues though.

A dog that size could fit between the buckets, but there wouldn't be much extra room for movement. The floorboard would have room, but I am not too familiar with that breed and how they act or how much space they like.
