Disappearing wiper blades

A few months ago while driving down the M1 (in uk) was doing around 70mph and had been driving about 4 hours nearly non stop in the rain with the wipers going when suddenly the drivers wiper blades just disappeared mid wipe.

Dealer unhelpful and said not a warranty issue and maybe I had taken the wiper off just to claim a new one.
they made me pay for a set as they don't sell singles!

They told me to contact uk customer services.
Which I did but they don't reply other than comments like well get back to you in 5 days. Then don't.

As you can see in the pictures the central "carrier" is still attached to the wiper arm. Just the rubbery bits that went awol.
car was just over 6 months old at the time and as far as I know on original blades. Never touched or messed with since factory fitted.

Yours looks similar to the rectangular stub that remained after my blade also failed during the rain last year, I believe it was RainX brand.

Apparently the blades-themselves are only attached to the hinge/hub via 4 little plastic barbs, and I was able to manipulate the remaining blade and get it to snap off without much effort, thinking at the time that my hitting a large beetle bug or sparrow would've snapped it off

So I hopped over to AutoZone and bought a pair of my ol' trusty Bosch blades for $27 each and chatted with the gal while she installed them for me.

So does this seem a poor design decision?
I was charged £110 for a pair from my local $tealer as had to buy a pair.
Do the Bosch ones do the water along the blade?
