They have changed the shape of the wood on the steering wheel with this new generation of capacitive toch steering wheels. Previously the ten and 2 were leather while the full top and bottom were wood. Now the wood goes around the entire rim of the wheel, on the outer half, while the inside facing half is leather all around. Sort of Bentley style. Mercedes has supplies of this steering wheel with as far as I know three finishes - piano black, burl walnut, and slate. Burl walnut and Slate aren't available on the GLE/GLS so only the piano black is avaiable. They're decided to make it only make it available with the full piano black interior trim, although early build facelift GLEs have the paino black whel with other wood trims. I've been unable to determine if this was a glitch or a change in ordering possibilities or whether this only happened on the earliest produced vehicles which were built before custom orders and dealer orders were built, when the only cars being built were the pre specced by MBUSA "market launch" vehicles.
