Head-Up Display border visable

Head-Up Display border visable
I'm impressed with all the functionality and colors of my Head-Up display (2020 GLS580), but even on the lowest brightness setting I can still see the rectangular border behind the images/text. It is white in color but the gradient behind it is not solid. It looks smudged almost, I've attached a similar photo to what I see (but the background box is at least solid in this photo), mine looks like smudged glass (white is some spots but not visible in others). I tried taking a photo but the camera cannot pick up what I actually see. I have a 2019 CLS450 and it doesn't have this issue ... thoughts on how (if) I can get rid of it? I did wipe the glass down, still there.

Both, but definitely more visable at night. If it's pitch black, it's really not visable, but under street lights it becomes more prominent, so I think it has something to do with light hitting the glass of the HUD.

Tried to snap a pic last night. This is what mine looks like on highest brightness level. There are areas in which you can see some light leakage of some sort that can be described as smudges. They are less visible when you're driving in a darker situation (areas with less light pollution).

Having a HUD issue myself with my three week old 2024 GLE53 with about 1200 miles on it. It happened just last night when I went out to the store. Ride out, no problem. Started it up to come home, and the graphics were messed up. I turned the car off and restarted...same. Turned off the HUD and back on again...same. It is most obvious with the off road view. I pulled over, turned off the head lights, and took some pics:

Yah, it reminded me of when a monitor was about to die. I went out this morning...and it's fine. Just what I needed, something that will come and go. At least I have pics for when I bring it in for something else...
But yes, the kind of ghost image of the full screen is uniform. If I was seeing what you were seeing, I'd make them fix it.

I had this problem for a week or so. I thought maybe I inadvertently changed a brightness setting that caused the image to go to max brightness or something. Then it went away. It’s been a month or so and it hasn’t come back. I’m not aware of any OTA updates happening during that time but am unsure how to check the date of the last update.

Sorry for the delay in my update, dealer replaced the HUD and I no longer see any of the weird smudge-like white light all over the HUD display. The only issue is that my steering wheel is off center towards the left and the HUD display doesn't appear to be straight (leans down to the right). I wonder if my tech was still hungover from a holiday gathering.
Looks like I'll be back at the dealership to get both addressed in the new year. I'm happy my HUD looks much clearer at night without all that smudged light.

Did they tell you what the issue was with the HUD that caused the "white smudges" so I can tell my dealer what to look for?
Also, there is a hidden HUD menu that can be accessed rather easily (I'm sure you can find it online) that will allow you to change the "tilt" of the HUD so it will no longer lead down to the right. It only takes a few minutes to fix, easier than going to dealer.

Thanks for letting me know about the hidden menu. Whew! Scared they would have to open up my dash again. I've already had it opened up for a faulty actuator; no issues with post rattles so maybe the techs are used to doing that work.

Are you just talking about the normal adjustment setting?

My HUD is the same as yours and the other who have chimed in. So that leads me to believe this is "just the way it is" and not an issue per se. And as far as I know there is not any way to adjust the opacity further. It doesn't really bother me but I agree it is kinda dumb since I have a 2019 CLS with HUD that doesn't have this issue. Going from that car to the GLS I feel like there are a few things that Mercedes has regressed with. The HUD Is a big one. For me at least.

I just googled it and couldn't find it either, I'll keep looking. It's a very simple menu to access just by holding down a few buttons or something similar and it lets you tilt the HUD along with a few other tweaks for how it is displayed. It's for the techs to get it right if they have to install a new one. It's not very useful, except for the above mentioned situation where the HUD is not level.
