Winter Tire Options

In the market for a set of winter tires. I currently have the 21" staggered set and the selection/price of winter tread is horrendous at this size. On Costco.com it lists 20" 275/50r20 as a standard option; this gives us more options and a larger sidewall. Speedometer should be ok as the overall tire diameter is within 0.2". Will the calipers clear 20" rims? Will the car accept a second set of tires with tpms? Will the tire shops be able to do this or do I need to go to the dealer?

Now before anyone accuses anybody of cheaping out, the dealer offered me a set of Pirelli Scorpion Winter tires for $2800 before install and tax. These tires also consistently rate at the tail end of winter tire reviews. I can buy a dedicated set of OEM rims and Blizzaks for less!

Thanks

Oh look! The 437th thread bemoaning the lack of winter tire options on the X167! 🙄

It's a new year, and tire manufacturers are making significant improvements with new generations.
Input is always welcome.

Bemoaning AND offering a solution, just wondering if we can program multiple sets of tires like I can on my Lexus and Ford

Agreed. Unfortunately these 315's are considered "niche" and very few make shoes for them.

I'm also still looking for the cheapest 20" square wheel option for a GLS580

Am also looking for a good winter tire set for my GLS... I don't get the point of buying a new set of wheels.. I assume getting 21" tires to fit on the factory wheel would be best. I saw a few options on Discount-Tire for about 480-500 USD per tire.

I only do a couple of trips out of Florida a year, and was hoping I could buy some $200 steel wheels and mount some chunky tires on them. Last year I got stuck for a week due to 2" of snow and the factory summer tires - the car would literally not move without spinning and crabbing towards the nearest ditch.

We ended up purchasing some custom 22" wheels for a square setup, but used a custom rear offset so we don't need a spacer for the staggered look. Many AS options in that size (285/45R22). They aren't the cheapest wheels, but we wanted to keep the staggered look without a spacer and they are much cheaper than the 22" MB wheels.

Summer tires is a big mistake.... All-Season is the way to go and as am reading and searching around, am thinking of just keeping my current All-Season tires (Perilli) and go from there. $2000 for new 21" winter tires doesn't seem to be worth it... Am sure the all season tires will do fine.

I also just coded the "Snow Mode" by Elebest.. Will post about it later when I get to try it even on dry roads. Looks like it also adjusts the ESP under Snow mode. I should be fine with All Season tires and Snow mode coded now (at least will try in winter).

The offsets probably wouldn't be the same so I would double check those numbers.

I wish that I at least had that option. I'm on 23" OEM rims and my dealer won't install or authorize any other size of rim to keep my extended warranty, tire protection plan, etc. I have not been able to find any All-season or Winter tires with the stock 23" staggered configuration. MB recently authorized the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S Summer Tires for my VIN, but that just gives me a third summer tire option. I have no options for All-season or winter until I go to a non-MB shop to see if they can get some new wheels to work on it. I haven't found a shop nearby that I can trust for that yet.

The dealers around us would sell us 20-22" MB wheels for our 2024 GLS580 (stock was 23"). They are also now offering a 21" winter set. This changed in the last month or so. Initially there were zero dealer options. I'm not sure when you checked, but maybe check again? They obviously won't provide guidance for aftermarket wheels.

Thank you! I just checked again and they have two 20" wheel options in the the system now. One from the USA (#120) and one from Germany (#75). I am going to get one of the USA wheels and we are going to test fit some tires.
