Took in for clicking. Dealer says metal in oil, related to piston friction, acknowledged no reason it should have happened. Have gotten it services religiously at the dealer and no cause on our end. Obviously out of warranty, $30K to fix. MB USA doing nothing for us. Anyone heard of this? Any legal actions pending on this?

Which model? GLS450? Uncommon for the M256 3.0 inline-6 to blow up but it happens.

Mercedes is a low quality manufacturing company which means inconsistency from unit-to-unit.

Yes. And the fan went out on the central control panel which would require full replacement of that as well. All in $50K of service

Another option is to call indy shops for a quote on a remanufactured engine.

For the same cash out of pocket it’s either that or a new CR-V.

Please post your VIN.

It is either the M256 3.0 inline-6 or M276 3.0TTV6. Either way engine grenade @50k miles is uncommon, and possible for these engines.

If it was any of the current or past three or four MB four-bangers grenade would be the normal and expected ownership experience.

Ebay has M256 engines for $15k. Assume $20k retail to consumer +$7k-$10k indy shop labor.

$30k out the door. Maybe some credit for a core return.

HVAC fan is probably a windshield-out and dash-out job. $10k is not out of the question.

Blue book on it doesn't justify it

How often were oil changes done?

How far out of warranty? Any offering of assistance from Mercedes to help cover this?

2 years out of warranty. Serviced every service period completely with the dealer. No- they spent time discussing with MB USA and they decided to give us zip. We're done with Mercedes and will be a detractor whenever we can

can you be more specific to your oil change interval? Though it was done at the dealer was it done with the dealer schedule or did you do extra? Ultimately, we are wondering if 10,000+ mile oil changes might have contributed to another failed engine.

My questions as well. I've never been a fan of extended OCI's and have seen several engines fail that were changed exclusively at the longer OCI. Can't guarantee it, but the Independent Mercedes guy I know says if you plan to keep your vehicle you should be changing your oil by 5k miles and I have always done 5k or less on every vehicle I own. Many of these extended OCI's are done to reduce the "cost of ownership", but really aren't ideal.

I would be looking at finding an independent mechanic that specializes in Mercedes or is familiar with them to get a quote for these repairs. They should be considerably lower.

That’s really sad……..Sorry to hear about all of that.
I agree thought, despite how much we love our GLS, I am not sure that our next SUV will be a Mbenz. They are not doing any thing to earn current owners confidence long-term. I’l enjoy it until the unlimited miles CPO warranty expires in 2-3 years. Will likely switch back to BMW with the inline-6 if they have a PHEV X7 by then.

I wish the X7 had better legroom in the back. There was a rumor about a 3-row Porsche coming in 2027 but who knows if that will happen.

Porsche K1 project is stillborn. It was planned to be a 3-row electric super SUV. Volkswagen is revisiting electrification. No one wants an electric Porsche.

I don't know but at least I heard the electric Macan is seling pretty well.

I can tell not too much people like electric as shown with the Taycan depreciation and I guess it has software issues at some point but EVs depreciate rapidly anyways compared to ICE.
