Newbie ? on software updates
I bought a 2020 GLS450 (Cardinal Red) that only had 19k miles a year ago but it was not a CPO, and it is out of warranty. I've driven it 6k miles since then and I love the way it drives; my wife and I basically use it for road trips and when we need to tow things (which it does nicely). I'm out on a trip out of state for memorial day weekend and I got my first trouble light (looked like a shock absorber with coil springs) and a warning that said don't drive over 50MPH, but I felt no change in driving. After restarting the warning was not there, and it drove normally home from church. I've joined the forum and tried reading up on this, and some suggested this might be electronic (a pinched wire for one) but someone else said something about software updates, which are apparently only available through the dealer (I haven't been to a dealer yet). Does one normally go to a dealer for SW updates? How much do they cost? I have a recall that I need to go in for (apparently it wasn't ready when I bought my car but was known) which is a s/w fix; would that recall fix get me updated to the latest s/w for everything else? Love some thoughts on this. My plan today is to drive it back home since the warning is gone, but I would like to understand this more. I would much rather try to fix w/my local dealer rather than one from out of state (which is probably closed today anyway).

You can buy the XENTRY Diagnosis Kit 4 for a mere $37K from a third party, so maybe you want to pay a dealer or independent with the kit to do it instead! I think Mercedes doesn't sell it to the public but you can get it on a 4-year lease or something like that.

You could always get a system from ebay or something, a clone but not sure if that is a good idea.

From another thread I think he offers it for 950 before hardware costs. not sure if that is the up-to-date pricing. I didn't get the system myself yet only because I barely drive anymore and don't need the features... yet but having WIS, EPC and XENTRY is pretty nice.

This thread has gone pretty off-topic. That said, I don't think that the OP's "don't exceed 50 mph" warning is a software-only bug that will be fixed by a software update. You will need to get it into a shop at some point. It may take a few visits for them to fully sort it out (if you are lucky).
Note that it could pop up on a long road trip far from home. That can make for a painfully slow ride home.
Sometimes it will disappear with a power cycle. Sometimes, it won't.
For us, after the pinched wire was found and fixed, it has not reocurred. We have done about 10k miles since then.
