Turbo downpipes removal GLS580

Hello , Got answer to my question this evening in a hard way :-) : No, downpipes can't be removed without lifting the engine. And engine is not going out through the top/front if downpipes are not removed. But it is possible to lift engine to the point when it gets stuck on downpipes , then remove downpipes and then finish to remove engine. I have done this today and it worked out quite well . Maybe this info will be useful for someone. Best Regars,Vidas

I have been looking at doing downpipes, and from what I gathered, it can be done without either of those things needing to be done. I talked to German Car Accessories, they make downpipes for the GLS63. They said its about a 4-5 hour job.

I went with red star exhaust downpipes. I had an experienced tech install them. He did say it was difficult for him to remove given the changed shape and contours. I don't believe it could be done in 4-5 hrs based on what he said. Initially it was believed to be an easy switch but as he went along, he did comment it was lot difficult than he thought. It would have been easier to remove the engine but I never asked what the cost would have been. It ended up costing me lot more than originally quoted given the complexity. I am also assuming it's the same for 580.
