Wheel upgrade
I have a '23 GLS580 with the 21 inch wheel/tire package. I want to upgrade to 23 inch wheel/tire package. I understand the 23's are just over an inch larger diameter. My question is what needs to be done on the vehicle to accommodate the larger size? I've been told the Service Dept needs to make a change and I have also been told the vehicle uses GPS to determine vehicle speed, so it will compensate on its own. What have others experienced?

You're saying that the 23" tires are an inch larger in diameter than you current 21" tires. This will result in about a 3% error in your speedo and odo readings unless the dealer who is installing the new setup reprograms your vehicle to correct for this. AFAIK, the speed sensor is integral to the vehicle, not GPS.

You're saying that the 23" tires are an inch larger in diameter than you current 21" tires. AFAIK, the speed sensor is integral to the vehicle, not GPS.

All the forum discussion about upsizing wheels and tires focuses on "will they fit", and somewhat less on "will non-OE tires void my warranty?" (I think not). But an issue that I have not noticed being addressed is the odometer error on a mileage warranty issue. This might not be a common problem, but it could occur. Imagine trying to get a dealer to honor some mileage based warranty, and he points out that your oversized tires have rendered the odometer reading as meaningless.

So, since he has the OE 21's and by what he posted he intends to go with the OE 23's there should be zero issues. Furthermore, MB themselves offers a winter tire package at most dealers where they will sell you and install winter wheels and store your big ones. I get emails about this at least twice a year and a couple times in physical mail as well. If my dealer, or any dealer for that matter told me they wouldn't honor my warranty because I went back and forth between wheels, I would find another dealer. Immediately. Because that is a dealer that is just butt hurt that you didn't buy your tires from them or pay them to do the swaps.
Now, if you went from a 21 to a 26 that is not OE spec or something ridiculous like that, I could see your/their argument. But, as long as you stick to the parameters of what originally comes on the vehicle or can be factory optioned for the vehicle I think there is no issue there.

Perhaps. But at the end of the day, all the OP wanted to know is if they will fit and if anything special needs to be done and he got those answers in my original reply. Any additional information you or I have added may not be anything he even cares about but, it's there should he ever want it. 🤷🏼♂️

They are not non-OE first of all. The 450, 580 and 63 all have a factory option of 23's. And to my knowledge Mercedes is the only OEM that makes a 23' wheel. Which is why getting tires is so difficult (which has been discussed at length as well). Michelin and Pirelli are your only choices, summer only, no winter or all season.

Personally the sorter sidewall and lack of tire choices would turn me off. I purposely looked for vehicles with the 21" option when we purchased. The rears are still a bit of a challenge but not as bad as the 23" wheels.
