GLS580 Engine Ticking Resolved
Since I couldn’t find any help ANYWHERE on this specific chassis + engine combo. I thought I’d share in case anyone is having this issue.
I recently purchased a 580 w/ E-ABC & 3D surround at about 78k mi. Love the car so far… After I got it home I realized there was a loud ticking coming from the engine bay so I ran to the forums. I see posts about this issue on M177s and M256s but not the M176.
Clearly the noise is coming from an evaporator purge valve… Issue was I could NOT find it anywhere on this engine. After researching for days I FOUND IT. Problem is It’s damn near impossible to get to if you’re not skin and bones like I am. Luckily it was the one at the bottom for me. Couldn’t imagine trying to do the other one without breaking things.
It’s basically tucked between the engine and the fan. I reached down from the left side (where my finger is pointing). It’s about a foot down attached to the engine (where red arrows are pointing). You must remove the engine cover as it is blocking the space you need.
You have to slide out the valve towards the fan and detach the electrical connector and hose. Coming from 4 X166 w/ M278s I was traumatized by the plastic coolant hose BS so I was extremely careful and patient with the plastic hose which I’d advise.
It took me hours to realize that there is a rubber gasket thing over the tip that needs to be transferred to the new part that I think is only for the M176 (circled).
Replace in reverse order. Be patient because you are doing this blindly. I read somewhere that the proper way to do this repair is to have the bumper removed along with the radiator and fan and blah blah blah. Ummm…
Hope this helps anyone that is as lost as I was! Again I only had to replace the one on the bottom so if the other needs to be replaced, well you have an idea.
