Target Funds?

I’m not a fan of target date funds because they are far too conservative for my investing style. If you have a moderate or higher risk appetite I would go at minimum with an SP index fund, better yet choose winning stocks and hold them for some time.
What is your time horizon to retirement and what is your risk appetite? With a 2040 fund does it mean you are in your early 40s?

EDIT:
I just open a Small Cap Index funds. I hope this will give me the extra boost
