Thanx for your explanation Improv. It's very misleading info that MB gives us if we didnt understand your explanation. They rate all of the V8 5.5L different but yet the hp #'s are basically the same due to your rpm Tq explanation, correct? I just don't get what AMG is trying to do.

Hopefully this Wed I'll track the car for the first time.Wish me luck! I'll keep all posted.

Well, I think that the horsepower of the 210 E55 and the 208 CLK55 were the same, yes...I'm not sure what's up with the torque ratings. On mine, a very early 2001, the owners' manual gave horsepower and torque ratings as follows:

346 hp/5500 rpm
384 ft-lb/2800 rpm

....but in the pdf version that I downloaded from Benz, they changed this to 342@5500 and 376@3000. To make matters more confusing, the CLK brochure that I have specifies torque at 376 lb-ft from 3000-4300 rpm, which of course means that there'd be a true peak in there somewhere, obviously above 376. So, realistically I'd say peak torque is more in the 390 range.

They do the same thing with the new SC 5.5l motors as well...the E55 is obviously producing the same HP as the CL, S, and SL versions, and yet they rate it lower, probably so the folks who are shelling out the higher funds for them can have some bragging rights.

And of course, dyno (and trap speed) numbers indicate that all of the SC 5.5l motors are producing true horsepower well above rated horsepower, in the 530 range.

Cool

Someone on another thread said that the difference in the hp was because of the different exhaust systems. Not really sure if that is true.

the W209 has bigger tips, but i highly doubt thats gonna really affect the flow enough to add almost 30 HP, although the 2005 Models had quad exhaust, im not sure if its true dual though, or if its single pipe into 2.

Also exhaust systems, unless its a Turbo car, rarely add that much HP. Look at the American E46 M3, compared to the Euro. The euro has 343 while ours has 333, thats due to the less restrictive exhaust, because of their emissions standards.

Rafi PMed me a few weeks before the race as he had another commitment already. We did hit the track at Silver Dollar.

Details here....

yes, it had the dual tip amg exhaust + badges

the wheels were hre 17's
so icouldnt tell from the wheels
i raced 430's before, this was faster
maybe he started 1 gear higher than me??
because after the initial pull it seemed that the rate of him going backward decreased

as for which car is faster and torque #'s
the 210 55 had 390tq and 354hp
the 208 55 had 376 and 342 but i think that the tq peaked in a smaller range than the 209
i raced a 210 55 and we were both even up to about 80...not an inch in it
and i know for sure that the 210 is faster than the 208.. i remember being very surprised at the numbers when magazines started testing it.. it was slow for the power and weight that it had

as for the best 1/4 time for a 209
13.1 @107.1 motor trend

the best i ran was a 13.8@ 99. something
that was at palmdale, the elevation is like 4500 ft or something like that and the track isnt in the best condition

i put my $ on the 209

Not particularly, but its times were definitely hampered by its relatively light weight, skinny tires, and lack of LSD, all of which hurt its 60' time. The new one is a bit heavier, and more weight helps w/traction. Horsepower/weight of the new one is same as old one, so the two should be pretty equal...reaction time and driver will win/lose a race between the 209/208.

The E55 was tested faster in some cases, slower in others (I believe that Car & Driver tested one at 13.7 or 13.8, another at 13.3 or thereabouts), but this was again thanks to its higher traction helping its 60' times; trap speeds for it and the 208 were about the same...

Nice run...I'd expect a bit higher trap w/that ET, though; could you scan the slip or post the splits? I'd like to see 60', etc...

Yeah, same here! Those 245s are a JOKE on a car with that much torque and no LSD!! The 275's help a lot, but I still can't launch it as agressively as I'd like without frying them, but they're waay better than those sucky 245's!!
