Hey man, I'm with you, anyone in here ever drive a M3. With the 6mt its a drivers race. My guess is you raced a SMG car, and those things are goofy, if he didn't change his shift setting no doubt you would walk on him.

Off subject, but I've seen you in N Scottsdale on Frank LLoyd Blvd, unless it was another black C32 with a RennTech plate on the back. Sweet looking ride. Now that you have cut your teeth on the M3, next time I see you we'll see if you can get yourself a piece of my Black Mach 1.

See ya on the street.

Umm, see my earlier post in this thread. I've owned both. I agree that it's a driver's race and the cars' capabilities are notoriously unpredictable with significant variances in output (especially the C55). <peace>

Sport mode doesn't change the horsepower on the M3 one bit, and so wouldn't account for what we're seeing here. Driver reaction time alone can easily get you four carlengths, as can production variances from one motor to another, etc...really, the amount of time devoted to debating this is ridiculous. There was a video posted in the C32 forum of a stock C32 vs a stock M3 some time ago. Three rolling-start races, three wins for the stock C32. Give it a rest already....nothing whatsoever implausible about this race.

And I will add that I still have no takers for my offer to repeat the run (again). Once again, my modded C32 pulled about the same amount on a (presumably stock) E46 in a similar race. I guess that my opponent was not running in sport mode either.

If you've driven a M3 in sport mode with SMG, theres a noticeable difference in the drive between the two. I know it doesn't change the horsepower in a car one bit(but that'd be a handy little option wouldn't it?), but I'm sure 80 millisecond shifts and allowing the car to rev up to higher rpms would make some sort of difference right?
I'm in no way saying his claims are false, just the power of the M3 is a bit...dogged down here. Maybe cause its a bmw lol.

Careful, those Mach 1s are pretty quick. I raced one with some basic intake and exhaust mods in the 1/4 mile at Carlsbad. I pulled him by maybe two cars.

Well, the first thing to note is that it has not been established that this was an SMG; the original post mentioned nothing about what type of tranny the M3 in question had, so this is really all just speculation...

The second thing is that, while I'm aware that there are different shift modes, it seems plausible to assume that the even if the driver in question did have SMG (which again we have no way of knowing), he would have presumably chosen the settings to have given him the best possible performance, unless of course he was a total idiot.

Thirdly, I don't think the slightly slower shift modes of the lower settings (as far as I know, the lower settings do allow you to shift at redline, so only the shift speed advantage could come into play here, and that alone would not account for a four-length-plus margin.

And again: check out the video of the stock M3 vs. stock C32 in the C32 forum. Three rolling-start runs, three wins, no excuses.

You will not find anywhere that it is a big difference, if any at all, between the SMG and the manual gearbox. The difference you will see it more likly to be from the engine power varations than anything else.

Based on Euro results they are more or less equall. Fastest SMG and fastst Manuel is dead even, both to 62 mph and to 125 mph.

It is definatly a difference in the different modes in the SMG that will make sigificant difference in a race or on a timing device but...., that alone will not IMO explain a 4 lengths loss.

Stock for stock its not going to much between this cars in any straigh line race, anyone could win it. One tiny mistake or slow reaction and you loose regardless of what car you are in.

CS is the runout model of the m3 (I think faster steering rack)
