E550 vs BMW 550i

It's close but I think the E550 would have a slight edge at any speed....
Here is a real world 550i run.....

fwiw, the 550i being compared to the E550 in the Car & Driver article mentioned above was an iA. It's behind, but not by much.

As mentioned, hollywood was in the wrong gear.
Despite the difference in hp, the 545i might surprise you. From a 2nd gear roll while driving a 545i/6, I was pretty much neck and neck with a 550 all the way up to 150mph or so. This was repeated multiple times. The 550 did have a slight edge, but less then a 1/4 length as I remember. My front bumper was just about at his front wheel well. Yes it was in front, but not what you might expect with the extra hp. If you've seen the videos of the 545 against the 335, you'll notice that from 0-120 or so, the cars are quite even. Start from a third gear roll or higher speed however, and both the 550 and 335 pull away from the ancient 545i.
Since were on the subject, allow me to quote myself from another forum

I don't think there are too many "street racers" on this forum, but from a stop and a 1st and 2nd gear roll, the 545 can hold it's on against both a 335 and 550. From a 3rd gear roll at roughly 80mph however, both the 335 and 550 quickly put at least a car length on a 545 and continue to pull away.
From my experience, the 550 and 335 should have about the same performance in stock form.

Mr. Trashed,
It is surprising how the videos got around, but I'm not sure if they even exist anymore. I hope the videos haven't been erased though as I'd like to have a copy. I thought they were eventually going to be uploaded onto youtube or something so I never bothered to ask.

Oh and Chris, when did you pick up a CLS bro? Post some pics up.
You don't need both a 550 and a CLS. Diversify a bit man. Sell one of the cars and get that 997S that you wanted. If you're open to buying used, then low mileage examples can be had in the upper 60s to low 70s.

I dont care who would win by .01304280 secs or what. Drive a 550i in Sport mode and then drive a fat heavy E500. Its like Night and day, even if the E is faster, the 550 brings a bigger smile to your face. & i'm a Benz guy......

yea but the 97, 98 & 99 540i's were even faster, they didnt have VANOS to slow them down.

The fastest 540i's were the '97 and '98's. Vanos was introduced in '99. The fastest stock 540's ran high 13's - 14.0 @ 100+.

However, I do agree that MB needs better handling as in the new CLK63 coupe and the E63. Go try an E63 out and the handling is impressive to say the least.

The active steering only helps in low speed (i.e. parking lot) situation. MB also has similar function called Parameter Steering.

BMW E60 M5 - '08
The E500 (over here it's not called the 550 but same engine) is a quick car, as quick as the 550i at the very least (I never timed them but the stats say the E500 is quicker). Overall, I believe the 550i had better handling in the turns but once you put the E500 suspension into max sports then it handles beautifully as well. My 550i doesn't have the standard BMW M-sport suspension, instead it has H&R Sports suspension which I think is better.
Gut feel is that on the track the E500 would do better. But it doesn't sound as sweet as the 550i V8
..and my comfort seats are to die for, even better than the S-class seats

Autozeitung e550 vs 550i vs SRT8
According to AUTOZEITUNG in this test:

E550 0-100km/h=5.4s
550i 0-200km/h=19.0s
E550 0-200km/h=19.1s
In this test 550i had a 6-speed automatic gearbox and E550 had a 7-speed automatic.
550i 0-100km/h=5.6s
E550 0-100km/h=5.4s
550i 0-200km/h=19.0s
E550 0-200km/h=19.1s

I was able to run one with my 07 E550. We only made it to 70, had a 1/2 jump off the light and extended a car and change by the time we shut down. I was slowly pulling until shift time then he picked up a hair then back to pulling (car shifted so damn slow).

Recently the Speed TV Test Drive had one of the Millens (forgot which) drive the E550, 550i, Lincoln TT V6, Maser. Quartro and one other that escapes me on a hill climb.
The 550i beat them all and if I'm not mistaken, schooled the E550. It was a Lincoln sponsored event, it came in 2nd. The times were in the 170sec to 177sec range, iirc.
