73 280 holds on to...
...a Jetta VR6. No kidding. For the first time in a while, I took my old 280 out of mothballs last night to give it a whirl. I was buzzing along Pacific Coast Highway at about 50 and a VR6 passed me doing about 60. I pushed it a little harder, caught up and held. The VR6 pushed some more. So did I. The VR6 bolts out of the way. Being stupid, I floored it. The Merc didn't exactly "bolt" to catch up, but it lunged. Gaining speed is incredible in that car, like a determained jet. It just keeps climbing smoothley to the top. I know it's old, and unexciting, but we did manage to catch up to the VR6, who turned onto Las Virgines Canyon, which winds its way to the 101. This is where the fun began. Despite the power of the VW, and the supposed handling prowess the car has, the 280 held onto him!!!!!! Either they're not all they're cracked up to be, or he's a lousy driver, or I'm a great driver! lol...Needless to say, I don't think I couldn't have asked my Audi to do better. "Ahh, but that's German machinery for ya...the car outlasted her." Gumball Rally.
