C63 and an M5

I was driving on I-95 heading south, right after the toll plaza I am cruising around 60 and look in my rear view mirror and see a BMW driving up quickly, he flies by me at around 90 or so and without a doubt it is a blue M5, I speed up to catch up and we drive in traffic for a bit waiting for the lanes to open up. (I am not into the stupid traffic racing). After a few minutes of driving behind him I see there are two openings and we take them both, we are both going around 60 and before we line up he hits it with about a half car length lead on me, I hit it half a second later. He very slowly pulls on me until we both hit the limiter at 155 (at which point he is 1.5-2 cars ahead of me and we ease off), we get off the same exit, chat for a bit, he said "I should have seen the AMG badge" and gave me props on the car, I returned the favor and we went our separate ways.

M5 is a beautiful car and I can't wait to run into one when I am no longer stock

I think you did pretty good considering the M5 has 500hp. Also you should know the AMG motors open up at 30k miles.

Agreed, good story. Crazy speeds though...be careful! Is the car stable at 155 with no problem?

That sounds like a nice run. Was his a stick or SMG? What mods are available for the C63 besides intake and exhaust?

I am pretty sure that the M5 was an SMG, and the car was extremely stable at 155..I honestly had no idea I was at the limiter until I looked down and saw it, felt like I was cruising 60

I hit the limiter in my Clk55 and it felt solid. Why would it not feel solid in a AMG?

Not surprising. The M5 is a faster car up high but from a stand still you'll have the advantage.

Good race but I think you deserved a rematch since he took off first, that can make a difference on the outcome with closely matched cars.

I'm not so sure his measures of distance are all that correct. Forgive me if I'm missing something here but the OP claims that the M5 had half a CL on him when it "jumped", and the OP then states his reaction time was a half second later. Being an M5 owner that to me equals AT LEAST a solid 1.5 to 2carlength lead before the OP even got on it. If the M5 then "slowly pulled" him up to the limiter, it would be a much greater distance yet by the OP's own "measurements" the M5 stayed at 1.5 to 2 carlengths. It doesn't add up.

No offense, but the C63 isn't all that much lighter than an M5, maybe 200 pounds, which doesn't make up for a 50 horsepower advantage combined with significantly shorter gearing.

The fatter mid-range on the C63 coupled with a less than perfect shift on the part of the M5 driver could explain this outcome.

Mid-range for the M5 only matters in first gear.

The M5 did have a half a car length when he hit it, I am not sure if he hit it to the max, but the final outcome was 1.5-2 car lengths, believe me I can accept a loss and would not gain anything from lying..perhaps he either tried to take manual control and shifted like a scrub, or didn't go 100%...I am guessing the later, I am guessing 85-90%

Good stuff man, it's hard to drive these things to the max when the adrenaline's going. I've bounced off the limiter a few times looking in my mirrors.

Nice run. End result makes it sound like the guy in the M5 was short shifting somewhat but even then the C63 is a quick little car and you sound like you have more maturity than many that I've seen in them. You really going to chip it, gains will be big but warranty will dissolve unless your tight with your particular stealer.

Are you referring to the motor being fully 'broken-in' and at peak performance at 30K miles or?

At around 30k the car gets quicker then new (couple thousand miles).

Can you elaborate on this? Comparing the two dyno charts, the C63 has a far more linear distribution of torque throughout the power band, meaning a greater amount of usable power on demand. Although the M5 has a superior top end, it is more difficult to extract that potential than say, in a mash and go AMG.
