clk320 vs E36 325i

This weekend I'am cruising along the interstate doing about 80, when I passed a 325i which whas badged with an M3 logo also on the back. The 3 also had upgraded wheels and exhaust (and perhaps more). In any event, after I passed this guy he sped up to pass me. Not willing to let this go, I then passed him. Now things were serious. This time he nailed it and pretty much pulled away from me. What I want to know is what kind of mods are available for a 325i that would give this guy that kind of power? In the past, I have easily kept up with 328s and even 330s, whether on the go or from a stop. This guy had something extra under the hood!

Being an ex bimmerphile, the hottest thing going for the E36 is an S50 OBD 1 or S52 OBD 2 engine swap. It seems that mod is the best bang for the buck. My E30 (now gone...RIP) was equipped with a 1995 M3 engine before the accident. He could of had forced induction but you would have known right off the bat. More than likely if he beat you it was an engine swap rather than the usual exhaust, intake and software.

that would explain the M3 badge on the rear lid.

no, but the M3's engine probably did.
