330i Vs C320

not what every 320 owner would like to here but not the worst either..
i was on my way home from cross bay blvd and a 330i comes speeding and pulls up next to me at the light revin it up..
we take off together 1st gear dead even 2nd gear hes slowly starting to pull 3rd gear that car got fassst... it had a whole carlegnth inbetween to 95 and we were still on the gas till 100 not much more pulling at 100 def slowed down, but 95 would be enough to see how far he would be in the 1/4.. i talked to him after we both had very low gas... i have a powerchip c320 4matic with 980 miles on it not broken in at all and i had a passenger in the car (160Ibs) he had noone in the car.. does anyone here think that the weight made the difference in the race.. IMO i dont think so i know i would have been closer to him but not much... also when would you guys say your c class is broken in... how many miles?? is there a noticable diff in performance?
race 2 with 330i
lined up again after talking and we were on twisty roads all i have to say is 4-matic ruled i took turns that that beemer would not even attempt after we pulled up to the next light he says i guess we both have are advantages and took off..
nice guy props to that 330i driver for a good 2 races

Good job. When I break in an engine, I follow the manual. After the break in period, I slowly take it up to the redline. Let's say 4000RPM, then the next day 5000RPM and then up to 6000RPM. From then on, I drive it hard.

A bucket on wheels
i believe proper break would have changed the outcome a bit, subtract yourpassenger and add proper break in and maybe the it would hev been different. Was the 330 the zhp? i believe it has more performance then the regular 330. Also if i am not mistaken arn't all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive cars slower then rear wheel drive cars? i know for audi's, the quattro is slower the reg version. I find it funny that bmw has always been known for being the better handeling vehicle and mercedes the better straight line accelerating vehicle and now the tables were turned.

Thumbs up

With 160 pounds extra you would probably need another 10HP to get the same acceleration as you would have had alone. This roughly equates to .1 second and 1mph in the quarter mile. At 90 mph the .1 second is 13.2 feet or close to one car length. It would have been a tight race!!

Do you know if the Bimmer was equipped with a manual or auto tranny??
I never had the chance to race against a 330i but I read that the 330i is doing the 1/4 in 14.4 sec... Your powerchip seems to have a good impact on your C320 performance!

Interesting story anyway!

the 330i was an automatic.. there suppose to do somewhere in the 14.6 to 14.9 range depending on the driver. it did have the sport package wheels not sure if it had more hp than a regular 330i...
but if you want to hear something strange check this out..

330i gear ratios
4:21
2:49
1:66
1:24
1:00

c320
3:95
2:42
1:49
1:00
.83
the beamer has higher gears all the way threw however even with the higher gears he was not able to pull in first and hardly pulling in second 3rd was the only real difference.. i dont think that car has the torque to pull such high gears and make it faster in the long stretch say 120.. then again how often do you get to race to that speed in bk...
also they say the 4matic on the 320 has almost no effect on performance figures do to new desing not the 99 design and how light it is..

I would imagine the whole 4-matic system slowed you down. It would help slightly at takeoff but would hinder the rest of the way, not only the all wheel drive but the extra added weight of the whole system. Does anyone know the weight difference of a regular C320 vs C320 4-matic?

4 wheels drive means better traction but not neceserely better handling. Most of the time, 4 wheels drive cars handle like FWD at the limit... They will give better handling on wet surface but RWD cars may handle better than their AWD version on dry roads
