I've been an owner and follower of MB for just 1 1/2 yrs.

I was caught off guard one evening. Pulled up to a older C class at a light on an up hill street.

Wanting to show off a bit I gave the SL500 3/4 gas at the green ... and was suprised to see the C class holding ground.

I eventually let off at 80 mph, my wife was screaming at me so loud.

The badge was C34 I think. Looked it up on the net when I got home.

My first clue that MB has performance heritage.

You guys must be very proud of you 400 + HP / 400 + ft-lb tourque older model MB cars.

Rightfully so!

Talking It was either a C36 or a C43...no such thing as a C34

Here's info on the C36. It is a very rare car...more likely you saw a C43. Both of them are pretty quick, but the 43 is supposedly a tad faster (but only a tad!) from a roll, thanks to the phatter torque curve of the V8 & one extra gear.

C36 info

Here's the C43 info:
C43 info

But the 500E was da king! Great cars...on more than one occasion, I've seriously considered getting one, but it hasn't been in the cards...yet.

What about the W126 560SEL with the 6.0L AMG engine? You know, the one that ever mechanic loves, since he can put his kids through college after working on it.

fun kill but not suprising....you had said last model M3 and not current M3. I believe (please correct me if I am wrong - I was wrong before...once ) the last model M3 had only 230 hp - hence the new "Performance Package" offered on the 330 4 door....to remake the old school M3 four door everyone misses. The new M3 (only offered in coupe in the US - dont know about overseas) has only 333.....so not exactly a "goliath v. goliath" comparo....more like "david v. goliath" and david got his %$#2 whooped....but love the story and I LOVE sleeper cars......

I tend to agree that it was "David v. Goliath" ... I knew what was (should be that is) under his hood and I knew what I had.

But, when most people see a W124, they assume it is a 6 cylinder. I'm just keeping them honest for my Brothern.

Mercedes E280 -00
The whole time reading this thread, I've been trying to figure out how you could beat the M3 seemingly so easy. When you started discussing the power output of the M3 a few posts above I realised that you raced the US-version of the M3! I live in Sweden (Europe, if you don't know) and our M3s have 286bhp or 321bhp ('96 and onwards)...

That said, the E500 is a classic (and a fast one too!). I've been thinking about getting one, but it has turned out to stand between the C36 AMG and M3 instead. I still love Mercedes the most, but what makes me lean towards the M3 is that the C36 is extremely hard to find in Sweden (it wasn't sold here, so every C36 here is in fact imported). It's a shame, but, hey, the M3 is a cool car too!

We met at the next light and the M3 driver had this astonished look on his face! WTF? How could an old W124 take him? I first told him it was a simple old 2.6 liter I6 under the hood ... but at the end I came clean - with a big grin on my face.
Norm, I just discovered this forum very recently, and was pleasantly surprised to read your great post......go 500E500..!!

C43 vs E46 M3

I think that 500Es are awesome. Can you still find a 500E with interiors in good condition? It would be a nice collector car along with my C43s.

Fastneutron, yes 500Es and E500s are available. Check the Mbworld classified section. I know Afshin has a Concors condition 500E and David Hendy has a 'slightly' modified one for sale....
