Talking SL65 vs. My CLK 430

A client just picked up his SL65. I happened to follow him to the office and he kinda jumped on it...I floored it and...well anyway.... I think I could still see him. But really, in a five count he had a five car advantage...damn that thing is fast!

They really should offer manual transmission for their sports cars. Otherwise, the only skills required to move that quickly are the ability to spend large amounts of money, to move your right foot forward, and to stay in your lane. There should be some skill required, and manuals are oh so much fun!

You mean like the Ferraris with F1 trannies or the F1 cars with F1 trannies? :p

plus, think of the extra $...

in engine and tranny repairs when the inexperienced driver forgets to shift with 500hp under the hood!

My point is that most of the Ferraris these days are with F1 trannies ie manuals are a purists dreams and purists aren't the ones who buy the cars. If I remember the statistic 80%+ of all Ferraris are ordered with F1 trannies.

F1/SMG is still a hellovalot better than a true slushbox.

So how do you know? Certainly not the SMG's I know (BMW). I also tried an Ferrari 360 which was certainly no better than the "slushbox" in our SL.

I am pretty tired of the manual tranny myth. They are fun if you really enjoy shifting and have an open road, but not in city traffic. One thing is also certain; they are clearly inferior in the hands of most drivers

You are entitled to your opinion. Most sports car enthusiasts prefer the SMG on the BMW and Ferarri's to the slushbox on the AMGs.

Most drivers do not purchase $50K+ sports cars.

I guess I did voice my opinion but it appears that you know and understand the preference of most sports car enthusiasts.

Surprising that in my group of friends, many of which are BMW and Ferrari owners are critical of BMW's SMG implementation and clearly prefer F1 on Ferraris. Go figure...

Why is that surprising? I stated that the SMG offered on both the BMW and Ferrari's were more appealing to sports-car enthusiasts than a slushbox. You countered by stating that they prefer the Ferrari's SMG to the BMW's? What does that have to do with anything? Unless they are sports car enthusiasts who prefer the AMG slushbox to an SMG, your "counter" doesn't seem relevant.

how many of them have driven a CSL or e60 M5 which are the latest versions of SMG? The early versions are inferior for sure but they are getting better!!!

Hmmm.... Since we live in the US, none of us. I certainly have read great things about the new M5 (with some mixed reviews on the SMG btw.), but I hold my opinion until I actually have a chance to drive one. Just reading articles about cars doesn't do it...

Simple point really. I stated my opinion and you state the opinion of "most" sports-car enthusiasts, which is just a bit overreaching.

Again, from my personal experience and the enthusiasts I know, none of them considered the AMG slushbox (speedshift) inferior or shared your opinion.
In fact most comments focus on suspension, handling, weight and acceleration, some of which aren't traditional Mercedes' strengths.
