MB Model Designation Question
Some I do but some I don't understand at all. We have the E Class and the vehicles are clearlr E-xyz. But what's with the M class - actually, I call the "ML" class. I have never seen a M320, 430 or even an M500. The M55 makes sense. What the heck is the "L" for - this goes also for all those other models with "L" deesignations that don't figure in the "Class" description. Someone explain to me please. Thanks.

Based on the way the model designations were made could the L stand for long wheelbase.
Like with the 420 SEL; the 420 denoted the engine size, the S ment it was the more luxurious and larger sedan, the E meant it as a gasoline engine and the L means it had the extra long wheelbase.

First, the 55 is also called ML55, not M55. And I guess ML-Class doesn't sound nice. And M320, M430, M500, M55 don't sound nice either.
I'm not sure if the 'L' has any significance in terms of any acronym, like SLK is a German acronym (sport licht koupe or something - excuse my poor german).
