2000 ML 430 and CEL Light

I have a 2000 ML 430 and CEL Light came on today. Took it to my mechanic and the codes:

P0170 & P0173 came up

My mechanic reset the codes and told me not to come back in unless they come on. The problem is I just bought this car and I need to get emissions done so I can get my tag. I am pretty sure based on reading on this site that it is the MAF or vacuum leak.

What do I do?

Have you drove/owned the car for a few days? I just went through a scenario, '99 ML320 intermitent starting issue, turned out to be the crankshaft sensor. It ran fine (still does) but the next day, I put in about 5-8 gallons of gas, not from my regular station, and after driving about 150 miles, the "CEL" came on. I used my OBD2 code reader, and had the same codes come up.
Fiirst thing, I put in more "Good Gas" from my favourite station (high octane, always fresh) erased the codes, and nothing came back on for over a week now. Make sure the gas cap is on tight, check the o-ring on it.
I have been told about bad gas and the cap not on tight as a first measure. You may want to fill it up with a good injector/fuel system cleaner as well, such as Castrol or whatever.Check all the vauum lines, listen for hissing sounds when it's at idle. Try those steps first and see what happens.
I had a '95 Volvo turbo, with a frequent (weekly) CEL , and after the Castrol cleaner, it never came back for 2 months. I suspected the )2 sensors were bad and this stuff actually works, not like many high end/expensive name brands.
If the MAF is shot, I would think you would have other signs, such as slower starts, poor gas milage. Could be one of the 02 sensors.

codes P0170, and P0173 are the adaption values for the left and right bank of the engine are out of range. VERY COMMON. just make sure you dont have any vacuume leaks. If not then replace you Mass Air Flow Sensor. There are so common on the 112, and 113 engines that I change at least 2 a week!!!
