I have had this issue on my ML350 since day one. I mention it everytime I bring it in for service but none of the techs can duplicate it. They have reprogrammed the trans but I still have this issue.
For starters, I believe this is a trans issue because the truck does not drop any rpms on the tach and the engine never dies. Every once in a while when coming to a complete stop, the truck starts to shudder. You can feel the whole drive train do this from the shifter to the floor boards. It's as if the tranny can't find first gear and is trying to downshift.
Is there a fix for this? I want this resolved before the warranty expires.

The shudder is deffinately coming from your tranny. When the techs tell you that they have reprogrammed the trans, tell them thats not the problem. All they are doing is readapting the computers reading of how you drive. I had this problem and had them replace my whole tranny. That solved the problem

Wow, tranny replacement is the only fix! Was there a diagnosis for the issue, IE: valve body, torque converter etc? How often did yours do this? Was there a way to reproduce the symptom for the service tech or manager?

My transmission had been acting up for about 6 months. My dad never beleived me so I took it to the service manager and had him drive it. Going from 25 or 30 to 0, the tranny would slam into first and it would jolt the car and make a loud noise. Honestly, I dont know what the diagnosis was for it because I took my car in and told them i did not want it back until they had it fixed.

wow my 99 ML320 does this, when you are slowly coasting sometimes it will just go THUD and slam into first rattling the whole car. My transmission has been worked on about 2 years ago regarding the same problem.. now its back.
