Something rattling?
Anyone have any type of rattling at the back the truck? I've got a ML500 that has some noise.. maybe on the left side (inside) of the truck, and can't find it. Anyone out there have any similiar rattle??

My 02 500 is in the shop today for the very same thing. One thing to check is the cargo holds that are built into the back door. They hold the tool kit and emergency kit. Also the flaps that attach to the back of the seats to cover the down slope behind the back seats can rattle. I will let you know what I find out on mine.

well I am a rattle master... When does it do it? If you can easily duplicate it(IE turn stereo up, or go over some bumps... have someone you trust back there listening for it while not putting any pressure on any panels... My first few suggestions... check the tailgate. If somehow the plastic on the tailgate came loose it rattles quite a bit. Also I have seen the rear changer compartment make some rattles. If its more of a squeak I would say its prolly the rear seats themselves...let us know how the investigation goes

we tried to get the many squeaks and creaks from the cargo bay and tailgate in our '03 ML55 fixed but of course we got the car back with "no problem found" on the service summary/receipt. I've tried fixing the tailgate creak myself with silicone lubricant, WD-40, tightening the little round keyhole looking stops on each side, but nothing seems to work.

got the ML back from the shop. They greased the tail gate and replaced the struts (warranty replacement....that was a surprise). Anyway it did better for a day or two now it feels like a wheel is about to fall off. Can replacing the struts cause a wheel balance issue or alignment? I guess it will go back again. BTW..it still rattles.

I had a rattle that drove me nuts. I finally put my 11 year old son in the way-back and drove around town. I told him to point to where it rattled and I took a picture of him pointing to it. Gave it to the SA, who in turn gave it to the rattle-master at that dealership - and hey! They fixed it. They never told me what it was, but I no longer care.

Rattling
The back tailgate has 2 adjustment **** on either side of the door they are hard plastic and touch the metal of the door direct. I put a round felt pad on each of them and rattle stopped. This could be one of your rattles it also stops the plastic scratch the paint off (Bad design) Hope this helps.

thanks for the advice. I'll be checking those **** tonight. Brought to MB 2 days ago, and they couldn't seem to find the problem?? Surprise...? But, I do know its coming from the rear tailgate.

I had a noise in the rear that happened when going over bumps and made a clanking noise. It ended up being a bracket that either held the shock or torsion bar, forgot which one it was. The dealer found the problem with a tag-along ride and was covered since the car was still under warranty at the time. Good luck.
