Check your catalytic converters!

while the ML was in for the harmonic balancer recall, dealer said they found our catalytic converters starting to crack. They'll be replacing both cats under the new recall that just came out for that as well.

just fyi

Interesting...

I just took my ML in to the dealer for the Harmonic Balancer check, and requested if they would check in cat. converter as well, since that recall was also on its way..

The dealer insisted that they wouldn't check the CATs unless I get that recall letter from MB and show it to them....

that's kinda crappy

The techs had it on the lift and saw that the cats were cracked so they replaced it...we didn't even get the letter yet, only letter was about the harmonic balancer.

We check every ML that falls in the range for the recalls that comes in the door. We check the harmonic balancer to see if its the affected part number and check the cats to see if there are any hairline cracks in the welds and replace if so. We were only required to ask for the letter at first while parts were in low supply so that we didnt have everyone needing parts that arent available. Now they shouldnt need the letter anymore.

Maybe because I am in CA, the parts are still in low supply...

I should call up my dealer and re-check whether the letter is indeed needed, since, my exhaust does seem to sound a bit hoarse off late..it is most likely the CATs cracking...

Just got my cat recall letter Saturday, and coincidentally on Thursday last week it had started sounding like it had an exhaust leak. I crawled under it today and the passenger side cat top weld (of the cat not the exhaust) has a 3-4" crack in the weld. Tried to drive it today and it is beginning to sound like a dragster on hard acceleration. I emailed my dealer. Hopefully wont have to take it there twice (once to verify another to install) since my dealer is 85 miles away. Never received the harmonic balancer letter yet, so hopefully they can check both at the same time.
