How to replace front cup holder?

What's the proper procedure to re-install the front cupholder?

My wife knocked out the passenger side front cupholder in our 99 ML320. A sping came out with it. The cup holder doesn't look cracked or anything, but it seem at 1st glance too wide to fit back in.

Thanks

I don't know how you just "knocked it out". The cupholder is screwed in from the backside of the dash. You have to remove the glovebox and loosen the lower half of the dash in order to get access to the screws.

I hate to say it MBtech, but you are wrong. I hit my cupholder with my knee while it was down when i got in my car because im so tall (6' 8"). The plastic the holds the cup fell onto the ground a wire about 9 inches long that has a loop in the middle fell also. I put the wire back into the correct place in the dash and on the cupholder by using the other cupholder as a reference and volia it worked! It takes some time pushing the holder back in to prevent breaking it, good luck!

Thanks Al.

I did go try it and was able to fix it myself. Took a minute to figure out how, but I could do it in five seconds now.

AlBoston,
Can you give me detailed instructions on how to remove the driver's side cup holder?
Mine is permanently in the open position and would not stay shut. I need to take it apart to find out what has to be replaced and/or fixed.

MY is 2002.

Thanks.

to be honest, the design changed in 2000 so I am not sure. This happened back in 2001 so I totally forgot how to do it. Sorry.

Perhaps we should consult the engineer who decided to place the cup holders on the outboard side of the dash panel.
