remote key problems i need help

hey guys
i have my both keys stop working at the same time for a 2001 ml 430. i thought it would be the batteris then i put new ones and i did the reprogaming thing as it show on the book the key will work once then it will stop working. do u guys have any idea of whats going on? someone told me to buy a new key should i go ahead and do that?
oh guys i just went to the dealer today and they told me that they have to reprogram both keys again and they will charge me about $75 to do it. do u think they will do the same thing on the book or they have a special machine to do it?
thank you

You probably need to resync them!

checkout this thread where I posted the info:

https://mbworld.org/forums/m-class-w163/133573-dissemble-key-remote.html

Essentially:

within 10 Seconds do the following

1. put key into ignition and turn to position 2
2. remove key and press+hold the lock button
3. while holding down the lock button press the left unlock button 5 times
4. release all buttons
5. press either the lock or unlock button to finialize the programmning

PS: This has to be done every time you replace/remove the battery!

good luck!

I ordered two new keys for mine, they had to be 'added' (via the SDS tool) to the vehicle's memory and then programmed. Dealer only charged $50 to do this.

Thanks information & other post; I also did that for both keys - Then the program key will only work once. I can do steps 3 & 4 again to get another single respond from the remote after that it won't work.

Any ideas how to resolve this issue?

My take is that since both of the keys stopped working at the same time that the problem is not with the keys but in the vehicle. Time to go to a dealer and not an indy for this one. Could be expensive but must be done

Check the antenna cable. I heard they have a tendancy to corrode over time. It is located under the fuse box...it will take 30+ minutes to get to...but well worth it if cleaning or reattaching is the fix...could save you thousands.

Can't be this as the guys key worked once after reprogramming. Also think you heard wrong re the antenna cable corroding. Do not believe that its even under the fuse box.

I'm reffering to the fusebox under the hood. Not sure what it's called. Still worth a check as his other possible option is going to be a few thousand.

I know exactly what you are talking about and the antenna is not under there. Why try it as it does not make any sense. Your diagnosis skills need a lot of sharpening as does your knowledge of the ML. You are getting and giving bad information

Just to make sure I'm clear...you have given absolutely no help to this person in diagnosis...yet you are 100% sure I am wrong. Sorry douche...wrong answer. Tell us what is wrong if you feel the need to call me out...obviously you know...

OP, do what you want...if it was me...I would want to try a few FREE diagnosis' before spending ANY money at the dealer.

Also, FWIW...my remote would lock the truck..then not respond. I took the batteries out, changed their position in the key (the top went to the bottom and vice versa) and it started working again. Not really sure the technical reason two batteries tested at the same voltage being switched would be...but it worked. Also worth a shot.
